THE LIVING NIGHTMARE OF MICHAEL COLLINS (1990)

Years ago, a cyborg called Deathlok (aka Luthor Manning) was pulled from an alternate future (Earth-7484) and got messed about with a fair bit in the present before eventually returned to his own time where he finally defeated his nemesis, Hellinger (aka Harlan Ryker). But now, in the present day, Cybertek Systems, Inc are developing the soldier of the future. And, yes, it's a brand new Deathlok...

Marvel Comics Presents #62[4/4]
Harlan Ryker's Cybertek have a week to go before they demonstrate their new Deathlok cyborg to Roxxon in the hope of getting a fat contract. The cyborg houses the brain of volunteer Colonel John Kelly and is being tested against 12 mercenaries carrying live ammo, while Deathlok will be shooting paint pellets. The test goes awry when the computer fries Kelly's brain and takes over, killing all 12 soldiers and only stopping when confronted by Ryker who still sees the test as a success. With only a week to go before the big demo, the team are going to need to find someone else who'll be willing to volunteer their brain...

Deathlok #1
Days later, the fully-functional Deathlok cyborg is sent on its first mission for Roxxon, taking out Estrellan terrorists in South America. Harlan Ryker wonders if the cyborg stopped itself killing an armed child because of its new brain, once owned by employee Michael Collins who has 'woken up' and is changing Deathlok's programming from within. After returning to Cybertek, Collins takes full control of Deathlok, adds a 'no killing parameter and breaks out. He returns to his wife and child in this new body, which only succeeds in freaking his wife and son out. Michael Collins leaves them and decides to do what's right rather than what's easiest...

Deathlok #2
Deathlok rescues down-and-out tech-genius/amusement park prop creator Jesus Badalemente from a gang of muggers, and is taken back to his home in an unfinished condo. Nick Fury has joined the search for Deathlok as part of SHIELD's plan to shut Ryker down. Tracy Collins becomes suspicious when Ryker visits and tells her Michael is on a coma, while the Deathlok cyborg believes it's Michael Collins. Cybertek employee Mainframe tracks Deathlok down and sends a team to detain him, putting innocents at risk along the way. Deathlok takes a beating, but ultimately wins out. He decides to head to Estrella to find out what Roxxon and Cybertek are really up to...
Deathlok #3
Deathok uses one of Mainframe's Dragonfly drones to fly to war-torn Estrella, allying himself with a band of guerilla fighters and taking on Cybertek's Worker Ant robots. He destroys Roxxon's dam project and heads back to America to confront Ryker. Nick Fury intercepts Deathlok and asks him to help bring Ryker down. After smashing his way into Cybertek and beating all of their defense systems, the pacifist Michael Collins is ready to use the Deathlok cyborg to kill Harlan Ryker, only for Ryker his real body back...

Deathlok #4
Nick Fury discovers Collins has made a deal with Ryker and accompanied him to Japan where Ryker sells Cybertek's weaponry to upcoming Japanese warlord Yoritomo who plans to restore Japan's military greatness. Yoritomo betrays his ally, Shiro Yoshida (the mutant Sunfire), in a bid to start World War III. Ryker betrays Yoritomo by selling him junk weapons and Sunfire sides with Deathlok to defeat Yoritomo. Deathlok is hailed as a hero, SHIELD arrest Harlan Ryker and Fury offers Deathlok a job. Ryker's arrest prevents Michael Collins from getting his body back, but Nick Fury agrees to pass a message on to his wife to tell her he's on a secret mission for SHIELD and will return to her, some day...
