MARVEL UK READING ORDER: Overkill (1990-1995)

Marvel UK rode the wave of the '90s comics boom by shaking up one of their most popular characters - Death's Head - and introducing a whole load more. Even though that particular corner had a fairly short lifespan due to the inevitable crash, the Marvel UK characters are still remembered fondly by many fans. A number of today's top tier creators got their big break on these titles, including Dan Abnett, Gary Frank, Andy Lanning, Salvador Larroca, Carlos Pacheco and Liam Sharp.

Despite being from England myself, I wasn't a huge fan of the majority of the titles Marvel UK released during the boom. Death's Head II was an interesting enough character (though I'll always be true to the original!) but many of the other comics relied too heavily on unnecessary on guest-appearances by the US contingent of the Marvel Universe and having 'Death', 'Dark' or 'Gene' as part of the title of every series. I preferred Overkill which was a magazine released in the UK that collected the guest-star-free halves of the initial issues of titles like Warheads, Hell's Angel and Motormouth.

MCG Notes:

  1. Hi. I am looking for a Marvel UK character who I beleive was cancelled. Its an alien sojourning on Earth. He seems crazy but very powerful and has chaotic features such as one eye being smaller than the other, crazy hair do and a larger than usual mouth. While checking out the Earth, the Avengers try to stop him and he is able to fight them, I believe even Hercules. Any idea who this is?

    1. Hmmm... can't think of it off the top of my head. I wondered if you might be thinking of the clash with Charnel from Death's Head II #4 (featuring alternate versions of the Avengers), but I'm not sure. Can you recall what colour the character was or any other details?

  2. What a smashing guide to Marvel UK’s many titles in the 1990s, thank you. I can’t sign into the site to comment as me, John Freeman, editor of OVERKILL and many of the titles above, but thanks so much for compiling it. I’ll add a link to this on downthetubes asap
