SPINE: PRELUDE TO BLACK SEPTEMBER (1995)

Interior art from Mantra #22 by Dave Roberts, Stephen Baskerville & Chris Young
Thor recently took a brief trip to the Ultraverse (Earth-93060) when he was mistakenly drawn to the Godwheel by Argus (during GODWHEEL). Though the Thunder God made it back home, he took along an unwanted passenger in the form of Rune. On the flip side, Thor's adoptive brother, Loki, has relocated to the Ultraverse - a whole universe without Thor to oppose him. As if he couldn't supply enough mischief with his own vast abilities, the Infinity Gems are about to make their way to Earth-93060, too...
[GODWHEEL - Loki makes the jump to the Ultraverse]

Rune/The Silver Surfer #1[1/2] *
Thor returns to Earth-616 (following his unexpected reality jump to Earth-93060 during GODWHEEL) only for Rune to hitch a ride back with him. Sensing great power in this reality, Rune finds Gamora - formerly of the Infinity Watch - in California and forces her to reveal the location of the Infinity Gems. Arriving on Monster Island, Rune steals the Time Gem from Maxam's forehead and stops time, allowing him to steal the other gems from the Infinity Watch, as well as Thanos' Reality Gem. Adam Warlock fights Rune in the Soulworld within his Soul Gem when he tries to claim it, but the gem is attracted to Rune's vampiric nature and betrays Warlock. The Soul Gem instructs Rune to take the gems back to the Ultraverse, but the Silver Surfer arrives and destroys Rune's hand just as a portal takes him back to Earth-93060 where he sinks into the ocean. While, the Infinity Gems themselves are scattered throughout the Ultraverse...

Rune/The Silver Surfer #1[2/2] * (tie-in)
But why did the Silver Surfer attack Rune? Step back in time as short while to discover the reasons, as the Living Tribunal appears before the former Herald of Galactus and asks him to prevent Rune from defying his decree that the Infinity Gems not be used in unison (set during THE INFINITY GAUNTLET) and maintain the universal balance. Deathurge is chosen as the agent of Oblivion to stop the Surfer and allow the destruction of the universe at Rune's hands. Deathurge almost succeeds in stopping the Surfer by driving him to despair, but charges into Deathurge and obliterates him. The Surfer catches up with Rune and destroys his hand just as Rune creates a portal back to the Ultraverse, sucking the vampire and the six Infinity Gems into Earth-93060. Despite the Silver Surfer believing he's failed, the Living Tribunal considers this a success...

Magic expert Pinnacle helps Eden through the birth, but the baby girl quickly grows into adulthood and claims Eden's mask. NecroMantra is back!
Mantra #19 (tie-in)
When Rune attacked NecroMantra (during GODWHEEL), Thanasi left Eden Blake's body and entered an egg in her womb. When Eden and Lukasz had sex, they gave Thanasi the means to be reborn as NecroMantra. NecroMantra overpowers them all and magically assaults Eden Blake, almost killing her. Lukasz accepts her wish to rejoin him so that they can become Mantra again and watch their children grow.
