THE TRUST (2007-2008)

When Echo killed Elektra - leader of the assassin cult known as the Hand - her New Avengers teammates witnessed the corpse of a shapeshifting alien Skrull! But if she was a Skrull, then where's the real Elektra? And more importantly, who else might be a Skrull? Members of Iron Man's Mighty Avengers? Iron Man himself? Maybe members of the New Avengers themselves?

Luke Cage's outlaw Avengers squad is thrown into further disarray as the team must ask... who do you trust?
Past events that impact this story:
  • CIVIL WAR - The Superhuman Registration Act is passed
  • THE INITIATIVE - The Avengers are divided into two teams; the outlaw New Avengers go on the run
  • THE ULTRON INITIATIVE - Ultron unleashes an electromagnetic pulse over Manhattan
  • WORLD WAR HULK - Doctor Strange channels Zom to combat the Hulk
Crossover: The story leads through the New Avengers series and concludes in that year's annual. I refer to the team as 'New Avengers' in this overview, but they're not referred to that in the series itself.
  • New Avengers #32 (also see SECRET INVASION: THE INFILTRATION)
  • New Avengers #33
  • New Avengers #34-36 (also see VENOM BOMB)
  • New Avengers #37
  • New Avengers Annual #2

New Avengers #32
The New Avengers are all quiet as they fly home from Japan in a Rand Corporation jet until Wolverine runs through the reasons why no one on the flight can be trusted - any one of them could be a Skrull. Spider-Woman's efforts to convince the group to take the Skrull Elektra's body to Tony Stark is interrupted by Ultron's EMP (triggered during THE ULTRON INITIATIVE) hits and their jet plummets toward the ground. Wolverine pushes Spider-Woman - the team's only flyer - out of the jet, and Iron Fist brings it in for a crash landing. When Wolverine comes to,  Spider-Woman uses her sting to knock him back out, then leaves with Skrull Elektra's body..

New Avengers #33
The New Avengers all survive the crash and reconvene to plan out their next move, including how to deal with Spider-Woman's treachery. Elsewhere, the Owl tries to sell a Deathlok cyborg to a selection of costumed criminals, but the deal is interrupted by a man who claims they're encroaching on the Hood's territory. The Hood quickly materialises, shooting the Owl and establishing himself as someone worthy of the attention of the gathered criminals. Later at Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum, Luke Cage advises his Avengers to go home. If they want to come back, they can. Luke begins to wonder if his own wife, Jessica Jones, is a Skrull. Wolverine takes the opportunity to head to a bar and do some investigating of his own, but he accidentally discovers the Hood's hangout...
New Avengers #34
The Hood emerges and fights it out with Wolverine, shoots his tackle off then using his demonic powers to escape. Back at the Sanctum Sanctorum, Ronin (Clint Barton) invites Echo into the shower. Luke Cage and Jessica Jones tell Iron Fist they've decided to name their baby Danielle Cage. Strange performs a spell that displays the true nature of each individual team member to dispel any Skrull-related worries. Wolverine arrives and alerts the Avengers to the Hood's activities, but when they arrive in New York they're hit by the effects of a Symbiote bomb...
New Avengers #35
The Hood convinces a large group of costumed criminals to work for him by giving them $25,000 seed money and sending them on a job that makes millions. He even gives Chemistro a finder's fee. TO try and earn their trust, he leads a group of them to Tigra's house and beats her while Jigsaw films it. After selling the purloined Deathlok, the group count their earnings while watching the Symbiote-related chaos in New York...

New Avengers #36
Luke Cage is shocked that the Initiative-approved Mighty Avengers let his team go (during VENOM BOMB). While Iron Man and Ms Marvel plan their retaliatory attack on Latveria, Wolverine sneaks into Avengers Tower and confronts Spider-Woman who has defected to Tony Stark's team. He flees when the Black Widow arrives. Soon after, the New Avengers barge into the Hood's hideout, confronting his 'supervillain' army a huge super-powered army of their own...

New Avengers #37
The Hood's super-villain army soon realise they're up against just a handful of Avengers and a massive illusion cast by Doctor Strange. Hood encourages his forces to retreat, but a number of them are apprehended by the New Avengers who leave them for SHIELD to pick up. But the Hood uses his teleportation powers to free his men from SHIELD captivity and swears vengeance on Cage...

New Avengers Annual #2
Luke Cage's outlaw Avengers return to the Sanctum Sanctorum where the celebration over their latest victory is cut short. Strange reels in immense pain as the Hood's gang begin their onslaught on the group's not-so-secret hideout, having learned where they're hiding by giving Tigra yet another beating. The New Avengers are completely outnumbered, but the villains lack teamwork. The Hood confronts Strange, shooting him dead. Spider-Man and Jessica Jones get baby Danielle Cage to safety. Wong realises Strange is alive and helps him fight through the pain to channel Zom once again (as he did against the Hulk during WORLD WAR HULK) and beat the villains back. Ms Marvel and a band of SHIELD agents force the gang to flee and surprises the outlaw Avengers by letting them go. Strange quits the team and kicked him out of the Sanctum. The Hood is the only member of his crew to escape Strange's retaliation and considers what to do next. A desperate Jessica Jones takes her baby to Avengers Tower, begging to register in return for protection for her child...
