BIRTH OF A SPIDER-MAN (1994)


One of the most controversial Spider-Man stories of all time began with the four-part POWER AND RESPONSIBILITY crossover in 1994's Spidey titles, reintroducing the clone of Spider-Man from an often forgotten mid-70s storyline. The origins of the clone (who we'd come to know as Ben Reilly) would be explored in the foil-enhanced flip-book editions, featuring secondary covers and a bonus storyline in the back pages of each issue. This is where we'd witness Ben's birth and his harrowing treatment at the hands of the Jackal. Finally, we'd see that he would in fact survive his battle with Spider-Man and learn that he isn't Peter Parker...

Web of Spider-Man #117[2/2]
The clone of Peter Parker is born and is immediately physically and mentally abused by his creator, Dr Miles Warren. As fully grown adult exhibiting Spider-Man's powers, the clone has no sense of self. Despite this, he rebels against Warren and escapes.

Amazing Spider-Man #394[2/2]
Warren, in his Jackal persona, chases after the clone until they run into Gwen Stacy (who's actually a clone of Gwen created by Miles Warren). This eases the clone who seems to remember her. The distraction enables Warren to knock the clone unconscious.
Spider-Man #51[2/2]
As the clone begins to regain Peter Parker's memories, the Jackal dresses him as Spider-Man, convincing him he's the real deal. After being knocked unconscious again, he comes to his senses at Shea Stadium alongside the true Spider-Man. Though the clone doesn't see him that way...

Spectacular Spider-Man #217[2/2]
The Spider-Men fight over which one is real while the Gwen Stacy clone pulls off the Jackal's mask revealing to everyone including himself that he's really Miles Warren. The clone loses the fight. When he regains consciousness, he's outside an incinerating plant. Heading home, he witness the real Peter Parker with Mary Jane Watson and realises he's the clone. Having survived his encounter with the true Spider-Man, the clone heads off to deal with this revelation...
Amazing Spider-Man #142-143 (1975) 
The Gwen Stacy clone first meets Peter Parker in her first actual her first appearance.

Amazing Spider-Man #400 (1995) 
The previously untold story of the Peter Parker clone continues during THE PARKER LEGACY.

Spider-Man: The Lost Years #1-3 (1995)
Ben Reilly's origin concludes with the beginning of his feud with Kaine.

Spectacular Spider-Man #216 (1994)
The clone comes face to face with Spider-Man after returning to New York to see a terminally ill May Parker.

Spider-Man #51 (1994)
The clone is revealed to have named himself 'Ben Reilly' (taking Peter Parker's uncle's first name and his aunt's maiden name) during POWER AND RESPONSIBILITY.

Web of Spider-Man #118 (1994)
Ben Reilly takes on the costumed identity of the Scarlet Spider during THE EXILE RETURNS.

Sensational Spider-Man #0 (1996)
Following revelations that Ben Reilly is not the clone, he takes on the Spider-Man identity during THE RETURN OF SPIDER-MAN.

Peter Parker, Spider-Man #75 (1996)
It's revealed that Ben Reilly is actually the clone when he's killed by the Green Goblin (Norman Osborn) and degenerates like Miles Warren's other clones during REVELATIONS.

A new Jackal emerges during DEAD NO MORE: THE CLONE CONSPIRACY.

Amazing Spider-Man #22 (2017)
The new Jackal is revealed to be a re-cloned Ben Reilly who has retained his memories up to the point of death thanks to a new process devised by Miles Warren during DEAD MORE MORE: THE CLONE CONSPIRACY.

Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider #1 (2017)
