AGES OF THUNDER (2008-2009)

Take a step back to a simpler and way more violent time. Back we go to a time before the Enchantress wasn't the mistress of manipulation, Loki plied his mischief like a rookie and the mighty Thor was still arrogant and in need of a clip around the ear from Odin...

  • Thor: Reign of Blood #1
  • Thor: Man of War #1
See how these events fit into the wider Marvel Universe continuity:
[LOKI READING ORDER: The Trickster - Tales of Asgard]
Thor: Ages of Thunder #1
The Frost Giants brutally assault on Asgard, razing one of its walls to the ground and inspiring a human builder to offer his services. He bargains with Odin to rebuild the wall in return for Idun's hand in marriage. After gaining some dubious advice from his adopted son, Loki, Odin agrees but demands it built in half the time. The builder almost succeeds, causing Loki to earn Odin's rage. The desperate Loki disguises himself as a randy horse and distracts the builder's nag, slowing him down and making him miss his deadline by three stone blocks. The builder senses Loki's hand in this and reveals himself to be a vengeful Frost Giant. Thor arrives and rips a hammer through the giant's head.

Loki is exiled for a time. When he finally returns to Asgard, he tricks Idun into venturing into another Frost Giant's turf where he claims her as his bride. Deprived of the immortality-giving apples that only Idun can pick, the Asgardian gods become weak. The arrogant Thor initially refuses to help but changes his mind to show Loki up and tears through another Frost Giant brain to free Idun.
Thor: Reign of Blood #1
It's payback time as the Frost Giant's daughter spreads the harshest of winters over the Nine Realms, including Asgard and Midgard (aka Earth). Her attempt to win a dwarf-made treasure as a payoff backfires when Thor slices her in two and the dwarves take their treasure back. Amora the Enchantress sleeps with the dwarves in return for one of the treasures - a necklace with hypnotic powers. Odin steals Amora's necklace and she curses the Earth by raising all the dead to run rampant across Midgard. Thor heads down there with his crazy horses and operates a messed up meat robot to re-kill the dead. But against Thor's wishes, the humans eat his horses when they die. Thor generates Slepnir - an eight-legged horse - and heads to Midgard to lay waste to it for a century...

Thor: Man of War #1
Odin sends Brunnhilda and the Valkyries to Midgard to beat and/or seduce Thor into submission. Instead, they join forces against an impossibly huge Storm Giant. Joined by the Warriors Three and Balder, Thor and the Valkyries hit the booze to celebrate. Feeling his wayward son still needs to learn a lesson, Odin dons the Destroyer armour and gives him the thrashing of his life! As punishment, he transforms Thor into a frail human called Arkin Torsen. As Torsen, Thor has no memory of his life as a god and is tasked with tending to the sick. And so begins a cycle that will repeat for centuries...
The Trial of Thor #1 (2009)
Following the kidnapping of Idun, another untold tale of Thor's war with the Frost Giants is revealed; Thor's brutality is called into question by Odin.

The Rage of Thor #1 (2010)
Before the Frost Giant's daughter takes her revenge, the unjust trial of Thor leads to the Thunder God leaving Asgard and choosing Midgard as his home.

Journey Into Mystery #82 (1962)
Dr Donald Blake seemingly gains the power to transform into the mighty Thor in the modern age; it's later revealed that Donald Blake actually houses Thor's true form in another of Odin's efforts to teach his son humility.
