ARMOR WARS (1987-1988)

Tony Stark discovers his technology is being stolen and used by everyone from the US military to super-criminals. In a one-man war to take back what's rightfully his, Iron Man will fall out with just about everyone from Steve Rogers to the entire West Coast Avengers team.

This story was originally called 'Stark Wars' when it first ran in the late '80s. House ads refereed to the events as the 'Armor Wars' which was the name used for the storyline when it was reprinted in a collected edition, with editors believing that name just sounded cooler. And it's largely been referred to that way ever since.

  • Iron Man #225-228
  • Captain America #340
  • Iron Man #229
  • Captain America #341[1/2]
  • Iron Man #330-332

Tony Stark discovers that Spymaster stole his designs and sold them to Justin Hammer and tells James 'Rhodey' Rhodes he's decided to take out any armoured hero or villain who he suspects of stealing his tech. Donning his Iron Man armor, Stark begins his search and destroy mission by clashing with the Controller, Mauler and Stilt Man, using a negator pack to nullify the elements stolen tech.

Iron Man #226
After nullifying the Raiders, Iron Man hunts down and defeats the aquatic hero Stingray, immobilising his suit only to discover it has no stolen Stark Tech. Despite knowing he's about to make enemies out of friends, he continues with his mission. In order to distance himself from the actions of his own secret identity, Stark publicly announces that Iron Man is fired...
Iron Man #227
Iron Man takes down the Beetle and, later, Stark refuses to explain his actions to Hawkeye, leader of the West Coast Avengers. Tony Stark agrees to help Nick Fury and SHIELD bring the rogue Iron Man in. Instead, he dupes Fury and uses the opportunity to immobilise their Mandroids. But, his most questionable move is yet to come when he betrays an even closer friend. Steve Rogers - the former Captain America - has come looking for a favour...

Iron Man #228
Steve Rogers recently quit being Captain America, giving up the costume and shield. Now, as the Captain, Steve asks Tony to make him a new shield. As part of a plan to break into the Vault and nullify the armour used by the Guardsmen, Rhodey disguises himself as Electro and allows himself to be captured, eventually escaping and letting Iron Man in. Cap follows Iron Man, believing him to have gone berserk. Iron Man defeats the Captain and successfully disables the Guardsmen, leaving Cap with a slew of escaped villains to deal with.
Captain America #340
With Iron Man gone, the Captain gains help from his team in stopping many of the villains from escaping the unguarded Vault. Cap is joined by Falcon, Nomad, D-Man and Vagabond who help him apprehend Griffin, Mister Hyde, Titania and Vibro and return them to the Vault. The Armadillo does the right thing and gives himself up.

Iron Man #229
Tony's plan to sneak into Russia with his brand-new stealth armour, disable the Titanium Man and Crimson Dynamo and sneak out doesn't quite go the way he envisioned. Both of his armored foes have joined forces and are ready for him. He manages to defeat the Dynamo by disabling his armour, but the Titanium Man dies in battle. When he returns to the US, the West Coast Avengers kick Iron Man off the team.
Captain America #341[1/2]
The Captain returns his shield to Tony Stark, threatening to hand him over to the authorities. Stark dons his Iron Man armor and the two battle it out until he ends the fight to avoid hurting Steve who decides to give Tony the chance to do the right thing.

Iron Man #230
Abe Zimmer is busy working on a 'tapeworm' virus that will save Iron Man the job of attacking people using Stark Tech individually. With Stark Enterprises in jeopardy due to the actions of an apparently rogue Iron Man, the US Government hand a contract over to weapons manufacturer Edwin Cord to create battle armour for US troops that will also be used as a means of controlling the superhuman population. They test the Firepower armour by sending it after Iron Man who is overwhelmed and barely manages to escape with his life. The wreckage of the red and silver Iron Man armour is discovered and the world believes Tony Stark's 'bodyguard' is dead.
Iron Man #231
Having proclaimed the rogue Iron Man is dead, Tony Stark announces he has hired a new Iron Man (who is really still Stark himself in new Iron Man Mark VIII armour). It's not long before he chases down Edwin Cord who gleefully reveals he was behind Stark's recent troubles and was out for revenge after Tony and Iron Man destroyed Cord Conglomerate. Cord orders Firepower to kill Iron Man, but the new upgrades to the suit allow him to make short work of Firepower. Iron Man saves pilot Jack Taggert from being blown up by the glitching armour. Back on top, Tony Stark gets some much-needed shut-eye...

Iron Man #232
