SHANG-CHI READING ORDER: Master of Kung Fu (1973-1983)

I haven't read a huge number of Master of Kung Fu comics - just a few that were reprinted in Marvel UK's Action Force and the odd Mike Zeck issue I managed to track down - so I won't be doing my usual recommendations with this point. Having read very few of Shang-Chi's early adventures, it's not possible to recommend some over others. With this in mind, I'll say that Master of Kung Fu is something of a cult classic and, even if you're not a fan of this era of comics, it's well worth a look as the stories are like nothing else set in the Marvel Universe in this era. With the odd exception, Shang-Chi's kung-fu/spy stories had more of a real world setting than many of his Earth-616 counterparts. While Iron Fist jumped on the 70s Kung Fu craze, Shang-Chi's tales focused on martial arts rather than super-powers.

While Steve Englehart, Jim Starlin and Al Milgrom created the character, it was writer Doug Moench who really built Shang-Chi's world, picking up the series with issue 20 and almost sticking with it until the end and wrote the vast majority of his appearances in Deadly Hands of Kung Fu. Artists Paul Gulacy, Mike Zeck and Gene Day brought the art to life and kickstarted their own careers on the series. Doug Moench left Master of Kung Fu with issue 121 due to creative differences with Editor in Chief Jim Shooter and the title was cancelled four issues later.

Marvel eventually lost the rights to use Sax Rohmer characters Fu Manchu and Sir Denis Nayland Smith, making it seem unlikely that we'd ever see Master of Kung Fu or Deadly Hands of Kung Fu receive collected editions, but both titles have since been collected in various versions, almost in entirety (see below). Even Shang-Chi himself was in continuity limbo for a few years, but I'll be covering his later appearance in another entry...

MCG Notes:
  • Issue listings in blue & black: The must-read Daredevil stories from this time period, along with any often-forgotten tales that are worth a read.
  • issue listings in grey: Part of Daredevil's chronology, cameo appearances or stories of note that non-essential or no longer considered 'required reading'.
  • Chronology: Every Matt Murdock appearance from this period is included in chronological order - mapping out his timeline rather than just the order the issues were released.
  • Spoilers: The are some spoilers in the story overviews, though I've tried to keep them to a minimum - just be warned!
