NEW UNIVERSE READING ORDER: The White Event (1986-1987)

I'll admit up front, I'm no expert on the New Universe. I've only read the odd story here and there, so I've based the 'must-read' stories from this list on what I've read about this line of Marvel comics.

In 1986, Jim Shooter marked Marvel's 25th anniversary by launching a second line of titles called the New Universe. Set in another reality entirely (as some point designated as Earth-148611). The main idea was that the New Universe would lean hard into the "world outside your window" feel that Marvel was known for and display how normal people would be affected if they found themselves with paranormal abilities. Not only did the characters avoid costumes and find themselves hunted by the US Government, but the world moved forward in real time, reflecting events in the real world.

When a flash of energy dubbed the 'White Event' hits the Earth, a number of people find themselves displaying super-human powers. Star Brand and DP7 were the two strongest titles, from what I understand, so I've steered you towards those with the key stories from the other titles getting the spotlight. If you do give those other titles a go and like them, then you can see where they all fit together!

There'll only be one more entry for the New Universe which I hope to add very soon!

This time around, I've put the chronology together based on the work of the Marvel Chronology Project, Celestial who posted on Travis Starnes' website and the Marvel Wiki.

MCG Notes:
  • Issue listings in blue & black: Major chapters in the New Universes from this time period, along with any tales that may play a key part in the great multiversal tapestry.
  • Issue listings in grey: Part of the New Universe chronology or stories of note that non-essential or no longer considered 'required reading'.
  • Chronology: Every New Universe appearance from this period is included in chronological order - mapping out his timeline rather than just the order the issues were released.
  • Spoilers: The issue/story overviews may include spoilers, so be warned!
