NEW UNIVERSE READING ORDER: The Black Event (1988-1996)

The denizens of the New Universe (Earth-148611) dubbed the flash of energy that gave people paranormal abilities the 'White Event'. But the misuse of Star Brand's powers that resulted in Pittsburgh being nothing more than a smouldering crater was dubbed the 'Black Event'. And from that point on, things get much darker in the New Universe. The US Government force conscription on paranormals and hunt those who don't comply, eventually resulting in all-out war!

The wind down of the New Universe begins here as the brave experiment that was meant to celebrate Marvel's 25th anniversary fails to resonate with enough readers, no matter how hard it tries. Some of the characters interact with both Earth-616 (the mainstream Marvel Universe) and Earth-928 (the future 2099 Universe) before fading into obscurity for some time. Following the UNTOLD TALES OF THE NEW UNIVERSE one-shots in 2006, Marvel would try to relaunch the New Universe concept in 2007, though it still wouldn't take off. That doesn't mean we wouldn't be treated to more alternate versions of the characters, as well as the Earth-616 versions of Nightmask and Star Brand.

As with the previous entry, I've put the chronology together based on the work of the Marvel Chronology Project, Celestial who posted on Travis Starnes' site and the Marvel Wiki. I'm no expert on the New Universe, so please feel free to politely point out any errors.

MCG Notes:
  • Issue listings in blue & black: Major chapters in the New Universes from this time period, along with any tales that may play a key part in the great multiversal tapestry.
  • Issue listings in grey: Part of the New Universe chronology or stories of note that non-essential or no longer considered 'required reading'.
  • Chronology: Every New Universe appearance from this period is included in chronological order - mapping out his timeline rather than just the order the issues were released.
  • Spoilers: The issue/story overviews may include spoilers, so be warned!
