For one month in 1997, Marvel turned back the clock and ran Minus 1 issues for all its titles (except the Heroes Reborn books) to reveal stories that took place before Fantastic Four #1. It wasn't really a success, but it did bring about one or two little revelations...

The orphaned Alex Summers is struggling to fit in with the kids in his new school whose animosity is spurred on by the mysterious Mr Essex. In a confrontation, Alex accidentally incinerates another kid using his burgeoning mutant powers. Essex reveals his true identity as Mister Sinister, but erases Alex's memories of recent events, planning to return to him when he has more control over his powers...
