Marvel Comics Presents #169[1/4]
Inside the Heart of Darkness, the Mandarin is reminded of all his past failures. Not only has he been constantly bested by the original Iron Man (Tony Stark), but also the second Iron Man (James Rhodes) and racist stereotype, the Yellow Claw. To decide his worthiness, the Heart pits the Mandarin against past versions of himself.
Marvel Comics Presents #170[1/4]
Mandarin learns his previous failings have been caused by foolish youth, self-defeating haste, unrestrained ambition, reliance on science, arrogance and pride. Now that he's recognised his faults, the Heart grants the Mandarin the power to create his own army and a new headquarters. Next, he plans to remake the world...
War Machine #8
War Machine (Rhodes) shows up at Stark Enterprises and asks Tony Stark for the War Machine armour specs. Tony doesn't like the kinds of missions his former friend has been using the armour for and advises Rhodey to give the armour back. War Machine challenges Stark to reclaim it himself and an armoured fight breaks out, only for it to end with Tony using an override code to shut the War Machine armour down. In China, the Mandarin observes the tussle via a crystal ball...
Iron Man #310
Rhodes lets Stark believe his armour is in shutdown mode and goes for the sucker punch, having changed the codes since the last time Tony pulled that same trick. The fight is ended again when Stark Enterprises' Head of Security, Bethany Cabe, uses an EMP rifle to shut down both their suits. The Mandarin takes that opportunity to teleport the helpless heroes to his headquarters...
Force Works #6
Force Works head to Japan when the Mandarin's new super-powered minions, the Avatars, attack Hong Kong. In his castle, the Mandarin unmasks War Machine. Century teleports in, but his rescue attempt is thwarted when the Mandarin vaporises him and Rhodey.

War Machine #9

Iron Man #312
The Mandarin uses Century's staff to channel the power of the Heart of Darkness, spreading its ability to nullify technology across the planet. Force Works defeat the Avatars. Iron Man is teleport into the Mandarin's fortress where he infects the villain with a techno-organic virus. The 'organic' part of the virus allows the 'techno' bit to sneak past the Mandarin's anti-technology field, causing him to age rapidly. The Heart of Darkness abandons the Mandarin and leaves Earth. In the aftermath, Tony Stark invites Suzi Endo to America, but she decides to stay in Hong Kong and help rebuild. Tony promises Rhodey he'll repair his army now that they're buddies again.
