MUTANT MASSACRE (1986-1987)

Not long ago, the X-Men learned that Caliban wasn't the only mutant dwelling in the sewers beneath Manhattan. He was, in fact, a member of the Morlocks - a whole community of mutant outcasts who felt they were rejected by those who live on the surface - led by the wily and ferocious Callisto. When the Angel (Warren Worthington) was kidnapped by the Morlocks to become Callisto's consort, Storm fought her for the right to leadership and won. Angel and the X-Men were free, but Storm allowed Callisto to continue to act as de facto leader of the Morlocks.

Since then, Angel has rejoined the other four original X-Men as members of X-Factor, following the return of Jean Grey who has once again become Marvel Girl. The team's leader, Cyclops, is shaken by Jean's return after believing she had transformed into the Dark Phoenix and died. Since then, he married Madelyne Pryor - Jean's exact double - and had a son, but he has left them at his Alaskan home while struggling with his emotions. X-Factor have been advertising their services as mutant hunters, while secretly using this ruse to allow them to rescue persecuted mutants such as Rusty Collins and Artie Maddix.

Meanwhile, the current X-Men line-up have been through the wringer, with Phoenix (Rachel Summers - the daughter of Cyclops & Phoenix from an alternate future) stealing part of their life forces to use in a bid to kill the all-powerful Beyonder (during SECRET WARS II). And Wolverine almost fell in battle against Lady Deathstrike, only to discover Rachel's actions have caused his healing factor to slow dramatically. The team returned from their recent trip to San Francisco to take Wolverine to the Morlock tunnels so the Healer can threat his wounds. But he may not get the chance he needs to recover when incomprehensible tragedy hits the peacful underground community...
Previous events that directly impact this story:
  • THIRD GENESIS - The original X-Men reform as the mutant-hunting X-Factor
  • THE WILDWAYS - Elizabeth Braddock becomes a resident at the Xavier School
Major Crossover: With multiple titles and issues involved, Mutant Massacre is considered a major crossover. This event didn't have a banner on each proclaiming each to be a 'Mutant Massacre tie-in', so the issues that are included can be subjective (though a Marvel house ad did run a guide that only included certain issues). As the lead-in stories in Uncanny X-Man and X-Factor set the groundwork for the event, I have included them in the reading order.

X-Factor #7
On the west coast, the five original X-Men break into their own jet to avoid being spotted in uniform and letting anyone link them to X-Factor. Cyclops accidentally calls Marvel Girl ‘Maddie’, but dismisses it when she asks who Maddie is. They arrive at X-Factor headquarters where pro-mutant protesters are swarming, including Beast’s ex-girlfriend Vera Cantor. While Cyclops tries and fails to contact his wife, Marvel Girl ask the other X-Men about Maddie. Two exiled Morlocks - Bulk & Glow Worm who are dying of radiation poisoning - interrupt the protests and call out X-Factor, hoping to end their mutant-hunting threat or to become martyrs. Cyclops, Beast & Iceman (dubbed ‘X-Terminators’ by news reporter Trish Tilby) pretend to ally with the two Morlocks against X-Factor, represented by Warren Worthington, Jean Grey, Cameron Hodge, Rusty Collins & Vera Cantor. The X-Terminators get the two Morlocks to safety but are unable to help then further. Despite successfully building on the perception that X-Factor and the X-Terminators are opposed, Marvel Girl still wants to have it out with Cyclops…

Uncanny X-Men #207
The current line-up of the X-Men are staying in the Morlock tunnels while Wolverine receives regular treatment from the Morlock Healer following his clash with Lady Deathstrike. Wolverine’s healing powers diminished ever since Phoenix borrowed his life essence to fight the Beyonder during SECRET WARS II). Phoenix is now plagued with dreams in which Wolverine is trying to kill her. She decides to make up for the harm she’s done, starting by avenging the man killed by Selene in pursuit of Rachel when she first arrived in this time. She manipulates the new Black Rook  - Friedrich von Roehm - into taking her into the Hellfire Club and confront Selene. The injured Wolverine arrives and orders Phoenix not to murder Selene. When she doesn’t hold back, Wolverine stabs Phoenix with his claws…
Uncanny X-Men #208
The other X-Men take issue with the way Wolverine dealt with Phoenix and set off in search of her. Selene convinces the Hellfire Club to do the same. Discovering two of Selene’s victims in Central Park, the enraged Phoenix reaches her telekinetic powers into the subway and hurls Wolverine in front of a train. Shadowcat saves him, then Nightcrawler teleports all the X-Men & Caliban to Central Park. Selene’s magics transform von Roehm into a beast-like hunter and he reaches Phoenix at the same time as the X-Men. The immediate confrontation between the Hellfire Club and the X-Men gives Phoenix the chance to escape, and she even chooses not to warn Storm about an attack from behind by the Hellfire Knights in order to save herself. But the battle is interrupted by the arrival of Nimrod

X-Factor #8
Cyclops finally admits to Marvel Girl that he’s married and has a son. Marvel Girl notices from the photo that Madelyne Pryor-Summers looks a lot like her. Rusty Collins overhears Cameron Hodge and becomes uncomfortable with the anti-mutant stance he’s pushing. Later, the mayor’s office asks X-Factor’s to intervene in the X-Men’s conflict with the Hellfire Club in Central Park. Artie Maddox warns Rusty Collins that Freedom Force are heading to Central Park to intercept X-Factor. When Rusty goes to warn them, Freedom Force reveal they're actually here for him. From nowhere, the mutant Skids rescues Rusty from Spider-Woman, only to be cornered by Freedom Force…
Uncanny X-Men #209
Barely holding herself together, Phoenix chooses not to help the X-Men against Nimrod and accepts an offer from a magical stranger (a vaguely disguised Spiral) to enter her Body Shoppe and become a new person. The X-Men and Hellfire Club form an uneasy alliance in order to survive Nimrod. Sebastian Shaw is hurled by Nimrod into the upper atmosphere, the Black Rook is disintegrated and Nightcrawler’s teleportation is painfully disrupted. Colossus and Shadowcat catch Nimrod off guard. Under Storm’s direction he’s restrained by Selene so that Harry Leland - the Hellfire Club's Black Bishop - can use his gravity powers with his last breath to bring Shaw crashing back down into Nimrod like a meteor. The shattered remnants of Nimrod teleport away.

X-Factor #9
Having lost track of Rusty, X-Factor leave Central Park and see Magneto strolling into the Hellfire Club building. Following the sound of a mob, they see humans throwing eggs & bottles at Freedom Force in defence of Rusty & Skids, believing the pair to be human. Rusty & Skids flee into the Morlock tunnels. To avoid bad press, X-Factor and Freedom Force depart. In the morning, X-Factor see a message from Artie, implying he’s gone to the Morlock tunnels to find Rusty. The five mutants don their X-Terminators costumes and give chase. Artie immediately meets Leech and Caliban. Rusty & Skids stumble over the body of a dead mutant before Freedom Force find them. The X-Terminators arrive, but Freedom Force soon retreat when Destiny senses impending death in the tunnels. At the Pentagon, Mystique is berated by Valerie Cooper for Freedom Force’s failure, so she decides to find a way to out Warren Worthington as a mutant and find out exactly what he’s been funding, lately…
Uncanny X-Men #210
In Los Angeles, a human named Richard Salmons dressed in Hellfire Knight garb is murdered by a band of mystery assailants. His beloved Tommy - a mutant - escapes with her life. In San Francisco, Dazzler is confronted by a spectre called Malice. At the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, Shadowcat adjusts Cerebro so that even those without psi powers can use it, which she - with Colossus and Magik - demonstrates by tracking down the missing Nightcrawler and saving him from a mob. The confrontation with Nimrod seems to have cost Nightcrawler his teleportation powers. After recognising X-Factor as the original X-Men, Magneto meets with the Hellfire Club who offer him the position of White King, which he agrees to consider. Wolverine & Storm’s search for Phoenix comes to a dead end. The band of killers who call themselves Marauders follow Tommy to the Morlock tunnels and kill her after thanking her for leading them there…

X-Factor #10
The Marauders emerge from the shadows as they mercilessly slaughter their way through the Morlock population. They soon cross paths with X-Factor who are looking to take Rusty & Skids to the surface, adding surviving Morlocks to their party. Sabretooth almost kills Caliban. Mystique informs the media that Warren Worthington III is the mutant Angel and that he’s secretly backing X-Factor. Worthington Industries' acting Chairman Candy Southern drops into X-Factor headquarters, but storms out when she finds her beloved Angel getting closer to Marvel Girl. Rather than go after her, Angel accompanies Marvel Girl into the Morlock tunnels. They arrive in time to see Beast and Cyclops fall, and smashes the Marauder Prism in anger. Marvel Girl takes Beast, Cyclops and Iceman to safety, leaving Angel to search for Artie. Apocalypse teleports into the tunnels and saves Plague from the Marauders, recruiting her as his first of his Horsemen of Apocalypse, renaming her Pestilence. Angel finds Artie and sends him running while he faces Vertigo, Blockbuster & Harpoon, only to end up pinned to the wall by his wings…
Thor #373
Thor journeys back to Earth, unknowingly cursed by Hela as he goes. After making a failed attempt to transport himself to Muspelheim, he returns to his ‘Sigurd Jarlson’ identity and has dinner with Jerry Sapristi’s family. The next day, he’s alerted to the dark events in the Morlock tunnels by his frog friend Puddlegulp. Exploring the tunnels, Thor scares off Blockbuster, Harpoon & Vertigo and helps the injured Angel down from the wall they’d pinned him to…

Uncanny X-Men #211
Still recovering from recent injuries, Wolverine & Nightcrawler agree to drown their sorrows until a desperate and dying Morlock bursts through to the Xavier School. Newcomer Betsy Braddock (staying at the school since THE WILDWAYS) reads the Marauders massacre in his dying thoughts. Magik teleports the X-Men to the tunnels where Callisto is gravely wounded and is surrounded by dead Morlocks. Nightcrawler defeats Vertigo, but is taken out by Riptide. Wolverine & Storm lead a handful of injured Morlocks through the tunnels, until Wolverine picks up the scent of all five original X-Men. Shadowcat is impaled when she protects Rogue from Harpoon’s attack which leaves her stuck in a semi-tangible state. Colossus snaps the murderous Riptide’s neck, killing him. The X-Men and Morlocks board a train to the Xavier School. Storm orders Wolverine to stay behind, take one Marauder prisoner and do what he will with the rest…
Power Pack #27
Franklin Richards dreams of a war in the Morlock tunnels and projects a vision of Leech & Caliban, prompting Power Pack to suit up, choose new codenames to match their switched-up powers (except for Jack Power who's still considering his) and head underground. They narrowly escape Sabretooth and run into Wolverine who orders them to return to the surface. Instead, they continue searching for Leech, only finding the bodies of Morlocks they knew. When they find Leech, they’re set upon by more Harpoon, Arclight & Scrambler. Cyclops & Marvel Girl head back into the tunnels and help Power Pack repel the Marauders, taking Caliban & Leech to their HQ. Power Pack finally return to the surface.

New Mutants #46
Mirage’s Valkyrie powers show her an image of death over the entire Xavier School. Magik teleports Moira MacTaggart to the school just as the injured X-Men and Morlocks arrive. Things become tense as the hangar is turned into a medical bay for the hurt and dying. Magik teleports Karma home to collect her brother and sister, Leon & Nga Manh, but they haven't arrived at the apartment and Karma sets off an explosive trap. The New Mutants travel through the tunnels to Karma’s apartment, passing slaughtered Morlocks along the way which leaves them deeply disturbed. Magik and Karma survived the explosion, but the search for the missing kids is interrupted by the arrival of Warlock’s father, the Magus. Magik teleports the New Mutants away... but to where?
Thor #374
Thor sees off a second attack from the three Marauders, then carries Angels through the tunnels to find Artie along the way. Sabretooth goads Blockbuster into attacking Thor again to prove himself and he successfully shatters the bones in the Thunder God’s left arm. Angel distracts Blockbuster, allow Thor to respond by killing the muscular Marauder with his hammer. They soon find Cyclops & Marvel Girl and Thor passes Angel & Artie to them. They create a sling for Thor’s arm and depart. Hela appears and reveals her curse to Thor. She has made his bones brittle and, when they break they will not heal and he cannot die. Thor gives the Morlocks the vikings’ funeral he’d promised, but it’s intensified by his rage…

Uncanny X-Men #212
Betsy Braddock - now calling herself Psylocke - checks in with Wolverine who dismisses her for her lack of experience. Back at the school, the Morlock deaths, Nightcrawler & Shadowcat’s injuries and the aggressive change in Colossus weigh too heavily on Storm. Callisto convinces her to remain as leader and fight on. The exhausted Colossus collapses on Psylocke, trapping her and breaking a few of her ribs. Magneto heals Colossus, but he’s trapped in his metal form, paralysed. In the tunnels, Wolverine is distracted by Marvel Girl’s scent when Sabretooth strikes! The two clearly share a violent past, but Wolverine is more concerned with prizing the Morlock Healer from his grasp and getting him safely to the Xavier School than he is in an overdue rematch. Sabretooth reveals someone called Mister Sinister sent the Marauders to take out the Morlocks, considering them as ‘wild cards’ in a greater game. Wolverine collapses a tunnel on Sabretooth and returns to the school with the Healer, picking up the New Mutants’ scents in the tunnels along the way. Heat suddenly flashes through the tunnels (caused by Thor), leaving the X-Men wondering if the New Mutants were caught in it…
X-Factor #11
Cyclops and Marvel Girl take Artie and the unconscious Angel through the tunnels, running into a rogue band of Morlocks - the Tunnellers - with a superiority complex, led by the arrogant Berzerker. The X-Terminators rush the Tunnellers to X-Factor HQ just before Thor’s heat tears through. Not wanting to ally with mutant-hunters, the Tunnellers leave but are set upon by a gang at the pier who kill Blow Hard. When they retaliate, cops show up and shoot the others. Only Berzerker & Masque are still alive when Cyclops & Marvel Girl show up. Cyclops blasts the rage-fuelled Berzerker into the river. They return to the hospital where they are told Angel’s wings will have to be amputated. Elsewhere, Boom-Boom quits the Vanisher’s gang of thieves. In Atlanta, Apocalypse recruits his second Horseman, War

Daredevil #238
Sabretooth prowls the empty tunnels, waiting for the order to attack the X-Men directly. He fights off a small gang of humans and takes their female member hostage. Butch & Darla of the skateboarding Fatboys wander into an area of the sewers taken over by another young gang, attracting Sabretooth’s attention. Butch warns Sabretooth that this part of town is under Daredevil’s protection. Bored and needing a challenge, Sabretooth seeks out Daredevil and attacks him. Daredevil leads him back into the sewer, discovering his prisoner. Sabretooth loses interest after almost killing the girl. Daredevil takes her to the surface.
Uncanny X-Men #213
Wolverine, Callisto, Storm & Magneto search the Morlock tunnels. The lightning and fire burned all trace of the Morlocks ever having been there. Storm is angered when Magneto tells them the Hellfire Club have offered him a seat. At the Xavier School, Sabretooth takes Rogue out, then enters and goes for Psylocke, smashing Cerebro so she can’t alert the X-Men. She retaliates with a psycho-blast and flees, drawing him away from the makeshift medical bay. Storm helps Psylocke escape, allowing Wolverine to take him on directly. With Sabretooth distracted, Psylocke risks probing his mind and sees hints of the two feral mutants’ shared past as well as vital information on the Marauders. Sabretooth makes his escape. Later, Wolverine & Storm accept Psylocke into the X-Men. In Los Angeles, Malice asserts full control over Dazzler, symbolised by the choker around her neck…

Uncanny X-Men #214
Lila Cheney calls in the X-Men when Dazzler’s behaviour becomes erratic and threatens to expose her as a mutant. Malice takes control of Dazzler again when the X-Men arrives, unleashing her powers on them. Unseen, Malice jumps to Wolverine, then Rogue who she uses to attack the armed police outside the club. She announces herself as Rogue of the X-Men to the arriving news cameras. Malice jumps to Storm whose will proves to be too strong and she rips the choker from her neck. The X-Men and Dazzler's reputations are on the ropes again, so they ask her to join the team.
