VENOM BOMB (2007-2008)

Iron Man and Ms Marvel's Initiative approved Mighty Avengers team are recovering from a narrow victory against Ultron, when Tony Stark is faced with a defector from Luke Cage's outlaw New Avengers. And she's brought a conspiracy with her...

Cage's team recently confronted the Hand and discovered their leader, Elektra, was actually a shapeshifting alien Skrull. But how deep does this potential infiltration go? While the New Avengers were still reeling, Spider-Woman took the Skrull's corpse to Tony Stark to address the issue...

Mighty Avengers #7
Unsure of how to react to Spider-Woman appearing in his quarters holding the corpse of a Skrull dressed as Elektra, Tony Stark decides to keep this little revelation a secret between him them. Stark agrees to let Spider-Woman join the Mighty Avengers without Ms Marvel's consent as team leader. Before this can be resolved, a projectile launches from space and hits New York, infecting members of the public with Symbiotes. And the infection is spreading fast...

New Avengers #34 (tie-in)
Wolverine's has stumbled across the bar frequented by the Hood, but  gets his tackle shot off when they go toe-to-toe. The Hood uses his demonic powers to escape. Back at Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum - current hideout of the outlaw New Avengers - Ronin (Clint Barton) invites Echo into the shower. Luke Cage and Jessica Jones tell Iron Fist they've decided to name their baby Danielle Cage. Strange performs a spell that displays the true nature of each individual team member to dispel any Skrull-related worries. Wolverine arrives and alerts the Avengers to the Hood's activities, but when they arrive in New York they're hit with the effects of the Symbiote bomb...
New Avengers #35 (tie-in)
The Hood starts gathering an army of super-villains. He convinces a large group to work for him by giving them $25,000 seed money and sending them on a job that makes millions. He even gives Chemistro a cut as a finder's fee. But he still needs them to trust him. To prove a point, he leads a group of them to Tigra's house and beats her while Jigsaw films it. After selling a purloined Deathlok, the group count their earnings while watching the Symbiote-related chaos in New York.

Mighty Avengers #8

The Mighty Avengers wade into the sea of symbiote-infected New Yorkers, but half the group become infected, too. The Wasp tries out her new growth powers (using a serum from Hank Pym - see THE ULTRON INITIATIVE) only an even bigger problem when a Symbiote forcibly bonds with her. The group get some unexpected help from Luke Cage who's lost his own team to the 'Venom Bomb'. Iron Man unleashes a cure and two Avengers teams help the confused New Yorkers. Iron Man agrees to them go when the situation is over so that the Mighty Avengers can focus on the source of the problem. They discover the signal that launched the Symbiote attack came from Latveria...
New Avengers #36
Luke is shocked that the Initiative-approved Avengers let his team go. The Mighty Avengers plan their attack on Latveria (unaware that the launch signal was caused by Ultron - see THE ULTRON INITIATIVE). Wolverine sneaks into Avengers Tower and threatens Spider-Woman for betraying the team, fleeing when the Black Widow arrives. The New Avengers barge into the Hood's hideout, confronting his 'supervillain' army a huge super-powered army of their own...

Mighty Avengers #9
When Doctor Doom returns from a meeting with Morgan Le Fey in the past, he finds Latveria under attack from the Mighty Avengers. The team deal with an army of Doombots, while Iron Man confronts Doom directly. Their fight sends the two armoured opponents crashing through Doomstadt and onto the Time Platform, accidentally hurling Doom, Iron Man and the Sentry into the past...
Mighty Avengers #10
Stranded in the past, Iron Man and Doctor Doom decide to use time platform confiscated from Doom by Mister Fantastic which is held at the Baxter Building. The Sentry briefly fights his way past the Thing (who'll forget this moment when everyone's memory of the Sentry is erased - see THE SENTRY) and the trio return to the present where Ms Marvel warns them of danger. But it's too late. Doomstadt explodes and engulfs Iron Man...

Mighty Avengers #11
Doctor Doom outsmarted Iron Man and arrived in the present an hour and a half earlier after, learning how to build a demonic army from Morgan Le Fey on the way. The demons overpower the Avengers. Spider-Woman uses some previous-unrealised powers to free her allies. Ms Marvel rushes to the time platform where Iron Man and the Sentry materialise as a bomb goes off. Iron Man survives and the Sentry rips off Doom's mask and takes him into custody. Iron Man beats himself up over being outdone by Doom, but his real concern is the potential Skrull invasion. The Black Widow questions Spider-Woman's alleged new abilities. In the past, Morgan Le Fey rages at Doom for screwing her over...

The New Avengers' clash with the Hood's Gang doesn't go to plan; the army of heroes are revealed to be an illusion during THE TRUST.
