AWAY GAME (1984)



Emma Frost shows her exquisite timing when she makes another bid to bring Ariel (Kitty Pryde) over to her Massachusetts Academy by any means necessary, just as the X-Men are whisked away to fight in the SECRET WARS. Kitty's burgeoning friendship with Magik (Illyana Rasputin) will save her life, when the young Russian officially joins the New Mutants and stages a rescue attempt.

This story also introduces Ms Frost's own version of the New Mutants when the team clash with her Hellions with a line-up that includes young James Proudstar, the younger brother of the original Thunderbird who died on a mission with the X-Men...

Uncanny X-Men #180
Just as Professor X adjusts to his new cloned body that allows him to walk again, another psychic alien probe sweeps the Earth causing him serious pain. Ariel (Kitty Pryde) recently agreed to marry Caliban to save Colossus' life. Even though she didn't have to go through with it, Colossus struggles with er decision. Kitty makes peace with Storm over her new look, then accompanies Doug Ramsey to the Massachusetts Academy only to be confronted by Emma Frost on the plane journey. The X-Men investigate the source of psychic probes that seem to be coming from a structure in Central Park. They walk inside it and disappear...

New Mutants #15
Kitty Pryde is now a prisoner of Emma Frost and the X-Men are missing, prompting Magik to use her sorcerous powers to send out an astral projection to find Kitty. She sees the trouble Kitty's in, but Frost attacks her astral form which returns to her body but unleashes demons from Limbo on the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. The New Mutants stop the demon threat and Psyche's successful attempt to free Magik reveals her Darkchylde persona side to her. The team look to the Fantastic Four an the Avengers for help, but find they're also missing. Taking on Magik as a member of the team, they travel to Massachusetts to free Kitty themselves, but are quickly apprehended by Emma Frost who claims she and Kitty are now friends...
New Mutants #16
The New Mutants escape into the bowls of the Massachusetts Academy, avoiding capture by the Hellfire Club guards and even masquerading as two of them. But the hunted and apprehended by Emma Frost's own team of trainee mutants - the Hellions - who make short work of them. Only Magik and Psyche escape via a portal to Limbo, leaving their friends in Emma's clutches...

Uncanny X-Men #182 (tie-in)
Under orders from Professor X, Rogue returns to America while the X-Men (back from the SECRET WARS) deal with a threat in Japan. Rogue misses the answerphone message from the New Mutants and, instead, addresses the urgent call from Air Force Field Operative Michael Rossi (an ally of Xavier and Carol Danvers' first true love). While searching SHIELD files for information on Sebastian Shaw - the Hellfire Club's Black King - Rossie was rumbled by a SHIELD agent working for Shaw. Rogue breaks into the Helicarrier and rescues Rossi, taking him to safety. But Rossi is confused when his rescuer talks like Carol Danvers while wearing Rogue's face. Rogue normally persona to take control. Back at the Helicarrier, the treacherous SHIELD agent blames Rogue for the agent he killed to cover his tracks. Nick Fury himself orders her to be brought in...
New Mutants #17
Despite their victory, the Hellions fight among themselves over their performance against the New Mutants. Empath shows his lack of compassion and his willingness to cross moral lines when he takes control of his own teammates to prove his own superiority. Psyche and Magik recover in Limbo, then use a portal to return to the Massachusetts Academy where a full year has passed and Kitty and the New Mutants have been indoctrinated into the Hellions. Magik transports them back in time to just a week after they escaped Emma Frost and find the New Mutants. Their arrival is discovered by the Hellions who propose a duel between Cannonball and Jetstream. If Cannonball wins, the New Mutants go free. Instead, the duel is interrupted by Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost. The New Mutants use their arrival as an opportunity to teleport back to the Xavier School. They're safe, but unaware that a Demon Bear is taunting Psyche...

New Mutants #18-20 (1984)
Psyche has her showdown with the Demon Bear.

Uncanny X-Men #184 (1984)
Mystique (disguised as US Government operative Raven Darkholme) introduces Valerie Cooper of the Commission on Superhuman Activities to Forge, a mutant inventor who's invented a device that can neutralise the alien Dire Wraithsthe device is also capable of depowering mutants and Mystique asks Cooper not to share its design with Henry Peter Gyrich during WRAITH WAR.

New Mutants #21 (1984)
Doug Ramsey joins the New Mutants as Cypher; Psyche changes her name to Mirage.

Firestar #2 (1986)
Emma Frost recruits Firestar into the Hellions.

Uncanny X-Men #185 (1984)
Valerie Cooper goes against Raven Darkholme's wishes and allows Henry Gyrich access to the Neutraliser; Gyrich tries to use the device on Rogue when he leads a team to apprehend her, but hits Storm instead which costs her her weather powers; this cements Rogue's decision to stay with the X-Men rather than returning to her mother's side; Cyclops is revealed to have returned to his wife Madelyne Pryor after the 'Secret Wars' during WRAITH WAR.

Uncanny X-Men #193 (1985)
The Hellions return, clashing with the X-Men and New Mutants; the new Thunderbird (James Proudstar) is revealed to be the younger brother of the original Thunderbird (John Proudstar) who died after being recruited into the X-Men; Professor X telepathically shares the moment of John Proudstar's heroic death with James, dissuading him from killing Professor X and leaving him uncertain of who or what to believe.

Firestar #3 (1986) 
Thunderbird's thirst for revenge against Xavier revealed to have been planted by Emma Frost.

New Mutants #71-73 (1989)
S'ym turns against Magik in an effort to claim Limbo and Earth for himself during INFERNO.

Uncanny X-Men #269 (1990)
the Carol Danvers persona is separated from Rogue after a trip through the Siege Perilous; both fight each other for survival in the Savage Land, with Rogue reluctant to 'kill' her again; Magneto makes that decision for her, killing 'Ms Marvel' to save Rogue.

New Warriors #9 (1991)
Beef and Bevatron join the Hellions.

New Mutants #99-100 (1991) 
Thunderbird joins X-Force after the people of his reservation are massacred by the Hellfire Club during A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH.

New Mutants Annual #7 (1991) 
Thunderbird changes his codename to Warpath during KINGS OF PAIN.

Uncanny X-Men #281 (1991) 
Most of the remaining Hellions are slaughtered by Trevor Fitzroy's Sentinels, leaving Emma Frost traumatised during MUTANT GENESIS.

X-Force #42 (1995) 
Warpath confronts Emma Frost over her involvement in the death of his people and learns she wasn't responsible.

X-Force #74 (1998) 
Warpath learns Stryfe was behind the murder of his tribe during DESTINATION: UNKNOWN.

New Mutants #10 (2004)
Against Emma Frost's wishes, rebellious Xavier Institute recruit Julian Keller takes the codename Hellion.

New X-Men: Academy X #2 (2004)
Defying Emma Frost's wishes again, Hellion names his team of recruits the Hellions Squad during X-MEN RELOAD.

Uncanny X-Men #475 (2006) 
Warpath joins the X-Men.

X-Necrosha #1 (2009)
Selene and Eli Bard briefly resurrect the murdered Hellions using the Transmode Virus during NECROSHA.

Hellions #1 (2020)
Some of the Hellions are revealed to have been resurrected once again on the mutant nation Krakoa; a new X-Men-related team forms using the Hellions name.
