X-TINCTION AGENDA (1990-1991)

The world believed the X-Men were dead, sacrificing themselves to stop the Adversary (during THE FALL OF THE MUTANTS). Relocating to the Australian Outback, the X-Men were soon scattered with many of them escaping through the Siege Perilous to avoid death at the hands of the Master Mold Sentinel or the Reavers (during DISSOLUTION & REBIRTH). Now it's time for them to come together as a team once again. Unless, of course, the threat of Cameron Hodge kills them for real before they get a chance.

This event has a place in many X-fans hearts, partly because Jim Lee's art graces the pages of three out of the nine chapters. Even when it came out, I found that it dragged on a little too long and the art on the other six chapters didn't sit well with me. I love the creepy-as-hell redesign for Cameron Hodge, though. Archangel beheaded him before INFERNO, but a deal with the demon N'astirh meant that even a disembodied head could be frightening if there was enough hate to back it up!
Crossover: Coming in a nine chapters, the 'X-Tinction Agenda' is a lengthy, chapterised crossover event.

Uncanny X-Men #270
The island of Genosha s considered a paradise, but it's built on the back of mutant slavery. Mutants are transformed into mindless mutates by the Genoshan Genegineer, Dr David Moreau. The X-Men had already come into conflict with the Genoshans, becoming enemies of the island nation by freeing one of the mutates. The New Mutants and their new leader Cable are using the underground sections of the destroyed Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters as a headquarters. They've been joined by Forge and Banshee (during DAYS OF FUTURE PRESENT) who are searching for the missing X-Men, along with a de-aged Storm and her new friend, Gambit. Marvel Girl (Jean Grey of X-Factor) visits to catch up with young Storm just as a team of Genoshan Magistrates (including the missing X-Man Havok) attack, capturing Warlock, Boom-Boom, Rictor, Wolfsbane and Storm.

New Mutants #95
Teleported to Genosha, the captured mutants meet the villain of the piece, Cameron Hodge, who's now a human head on a massive, insectoid cyberbody. The depowered mutants witness Hodge's next move as he tries to absorb Warlock's Technarch powers, killing Warlock in the process. X-Factor join the rescue party as they prepare to head to Genosha, spurred out by the news report that Warlock is dead.
X-Factor #60
Cable, the remaining New Mutants, Gambit, Forge, Banshee and X-Factor arrive on Genosha and immediately come into conflict with the Magistrates. Cyclops has a plasma blasting fist-fight with his mind-wiped brother, Havok, before Havok escapes with the defeated Magistrates. Elsewhere on the island Storm, Boom-Boom and Rictor escape their cells.

Uncanny X-Men #271
Wolverine, Psylocke and Jubilee arrive on the island in time to save Rictor and Boom-Boom from the Magistrates. While they defeat them, Wolverine is still recovering from his injuries suffered at the hands of the Reavers. After a televised debate between Dr Moreau and secret X-Men ally Moira MacTaggert, Cameron Hodge interrupts Storm's attempt to take out Moreau. Wolverine and Psylocke arrive and are opposed by Havok. Hodge overpowers the fX-Men and forces them to watch as Storm is transformed into a Genoshan mutate.
New Mutants #96
Hodge captures and depowers Cable, Marvel Girl, Gambit, Sunspot and Forge before transforming Wolfsbane into a mutate. Rictor, Boom-Boom and Jubilee continue to dodge the Genoshan authorities.

X-Factor #61
Marvel Girl passionately reunites with Wolverine in a cell. Cyclops and Iceman disguise themselves as mutates to get into the island's main citadel, but are soon captured (along with Banshee, Archangel, Cannonball and Beast). Cyclops manages to free Havok from Genoshan control before he's apprehended.
Uncanny X-Men #272
The depowered X-Men, X-Factor and New Mutants stand trial in a Genoshan court. They're given the choice of becoming mutates and serving as slaves on Genosha or becoming dead. Rejecting the offer of slavery, Cameron Hodge decides to make the X-Men's suffer and sets up an arena. He then forces a tethered Wolverine and Archangel to fight. Havok helps Psylocke escape and Gambit manages to release himself before freeing X-Factor and the others. The Magistrate Chief Anderson turns against Hodge and helps restore Storm's mind. The mutants' powers begin to return as they join forces against Hodge.
New Mutants #97
Wolfsbane hunts Rictor, Boom-Boom and Jubilee. After a protracted fight, they restore Wolfsbane's mind as she swears vengeance on Hodge for killing both Doug Ramsey (during the THE FALL OF THE MUTANTS) and Warlock. Cameron Hodge reveals that is was his deal with N'astirh (before INFERNO) that allowed him to survive his decapitation from Archangel's wings.

X-Factor #62
Havok and Cyclops join forces and use their powers to destroy Hodge's cyborg body, leaving only his immortal head which tries to kill Havok. Wolfsbane slashes Hodge's head and Rictor brings the Citadel down on top of it. With Hodge defeated, Havok and Wolfsbane opt to stay in Genosha to free the remaining mutates from slavery. Back at the ruins of the Xavier School, the assembled X-teams stand over Boom-Boom as she scatters Warlock's ashes over Doug Ramsey's grave.
