MIDNIGHT SONS READING ORDER: The Rise (1992-1993)

A new Ghost Rider emerged in 1990, using Danny Ketch as its host and taking comics by storm. At a time when shoehorning guest-appearances the Spirit of Vengeance into as many other title just wasn't enough, Marvel launched a whole line of supernatural, interconnected titles. Johnny Blaze (now a gruffer, trenchcoat-wearing 'John Blaze' has already returned, justifying a second Ghost Rider series. Marvel brought back the vampire-hunting cast of Tomb of Dracula and Morbius to star in new ongoing titles. A team of characters dedicated to hunting the missing pages of the Darkhold were added to the mix and were all put under the banner of the Midnight Sons.

The Midnight Sons wouldn't be referred to by that name on-panel until the SIEGE OF DARKNESS event. Instead, they were known as the Nine - the nonet of supernatural characters destined to stop the rise of Lilith and her Lilin and prevent the resurrection of Zarathos.

As always, I'd like to thank the Marvel Chronology Project whose work I use as a basis and then figure out my own Marvel chronology based on the vast back catalogue of comics I've read over the last several decades. Every comic appearance of the Midnight Sons is listed in chronological order.

MCG Notes:
  • Issue listings in blue & black: The must-read Midnight Sons stories from this time period, along with any key related stories and often-forgotten tales that are worth a read.
  • Issue listings in grey: Part of the Midnight Sons' chronology, cameo appearances or stories of note that are non-essential or no longer considered 'required reading'.
  • Chronology: Every appearance of the Midnight Sons from this period is included in chronological order, mapping out their timeline rather than just the order the issues were released.
  • Spoilers: The issue/story overviews may include spoilers, so be warned!
See the history of the Ghost Rider in every story that takes place before 'The Rise of the Midnight Sons' with these reading orders:
