DARK REIGN (2008-2010)

The most popular man in America, Norman Osborn, positions himself in his new role and basks in the glory of the adoration of the American public. The world has been saved from the Skrull invasion by Earth's heroes, but Osborn provided the kill shot. His reward is the keys to both America's national security and Avengers Tower. Osborn ditches SHIELD, replaces it with HAMMER, forms his very line-up of Avengers and assembles the Cabal - a villainous version of the Illuminati run by some of the most prominent bad guys in the Marvel Universe.

With Iron Man and the real Avengers on the run, America is no longer a safe place for the good guys under Norman Osborn's 'dark reign'. Though his sinister past and lack of stability may result in a catastrophic fall from grace is his Green Goblin persona should ever come to the fore...

Due to the multiple teams of Avengers, I'll refer to each group by the title they appear in. Norman's team is the Dark Avengers, Luke Cage & Ronin's squad are the New Avengers. And Hank Pym/Wasp forms his own Mighty Avengers. The Dark and New Avengers are never referred to that way in the stories themselves.
Notable stories that relate to this event or lead directly into it:
  • ACTS OF VENGEANCE - The last major alliance of key super-villains
  • CIVIL WAR - The Passing of the Superhuman Registration Act
  • THE INITIATIVE - Norman Osborn struggles with his Green Goblin persona while leading the Thunderbolts; more Initiative-sponsored super-teams are introduced across America
  • SECRET INVASION - Norman Osborn ends Skrulls' invasion of Earth
MCG Notes:
  • Only want to read the essentials? There's no core 'Dark Reign' series, but I've maked key issues an asterisk *. Read the story in its entirety, if you like. Or just read the main series and add the issues featuring the characters who interest you the most.
  • Dark Reign: Made Men: The five-part digital comics series was also collected as a 'Dark Reign: Made Men' one-shot in both print and digital.
  • Dark Reign: MODOK - Reign Delay: This digital series is not in-continuity and has not been included in this guide.
  • Dark Reign Files: I'll expand this one-shot profiles comic in its own entry at a later date.
Related Events: Marvel titles carrying the 'Dark Reign' deal with the fallout of 'Secret Invasion' - predominantly centering around Norman Osborn's new position of power, the activities of the Dark Avengers and the machinations of the sinister Cabal. While it's not a crossover in the traditional sense, it does contain smaller crossover events and ties into others, all of which have their own entries. Due to the sheer size of this entry, I've covered story arcs rather that every individual issue to keep it down in size.
