THE SURTUR SAGA (1984-1985)

It hasn't been long since then first threat of Ragnarok, but the signs that Asgard may be coming to its inevitable end are bearing their apocalyptic teeth once again. And just as Thor had found a nice Earth girl to settle down with, too.

OK, so he doesn't realise she's not an Earth girl and is actually Lorelei - younger sister of Amora the Enchantress. At least there's good news for Balder the Brave who's finally about to have his revenge on Loki for killing him during the last RAGNAROK...

The tie-ins for this story largely involve the sudden snowfall unleashed by the Casket of Ancient Winters and don't really reflect any other aspect of the story, such as the demon invasion. You can largely drop the tie-ins and appreciate the story, but it's fun to see how other Marvel Universe titles took part!
MCG Note: The issues marked with an asterisk are the essential chapters of 'The Surtur Saga'. If you don't want to read every tie-in and only want to pick up those key chapters, they're the issues to go for.

See how this event fits into these characters' overall story:
Thor #344 *
Balder the Brave is struggling with the fact that he was killed by Loki and kept in a half-death state by Odin (during RAGNAROK) which has lead to him piling on the pounds to go with his whitened hair. Queen Karnilla of the Norns has let him live with her since he removed himself from Asgard. Geri (one of Odin's giant wolves) summons him back to Asgard to take a message to Loki, the man who murdered him. Balder makes his way to Loki's castle where he finds the villain fraternising with Malekith the Accursed, the Dark Elf. Balder breaks his vow of non-violence and beheads Loki while Malekith teleports away. When he leaves, Loki picks his head up and puts it back on. On Earth, Thor's been busy making a life for himself as construction worker Sigurd Jarlson, not realising his supposedly human girlfriend, Melodi, is really the duplicitous Asgardian Lorelei.

Thor #345 *
Dr Eric Willis murders his secretary by tying her up and feeding her a hamburger. He escapes jail by feeding a cop a french fry, but reveals the secret location of the Casket of Ancient Winters to Malekith (disguised as an attractive female) before he dies. Eric's son takes up his father's mission. Thor learns Eric is missing and learns Malekith has returned. In Asgard, Balder has exiled himself to the edge of Asgard and awaits death. In MuspelheimSurtur makes the finishing touches to his super-sized Twilight Sword...

Thor #346 *
Thor locates Eric's son, Roger Willis, who has managed to locate the fabled Casket of Ancient Winters. On the 59th Street Bridge, the two of them fend off attacks from the freakish Hounds of the Hunter. In a bar, Lorelei brags to strangers about the power she has over her boyfriend, Thor. Malekith uses this to his advantage, finally tricking Thor into drinking the Lorelei's golden mead and taking Lorelei hostage. The Thunder God kisses a fake 'Melodi' who turns out to be a log. Enraged, he heads to England with Roger. In Asgard, Balder's suicide attempt is interrupted when he rescues a woman from a Sand Devil, not realising he's being watched by someone who wants him dead. In Muspelheim, Surtur gathers his army...

Thor #347 *
Thor and Roger Willis break into the Dark Elves' domain in the Cotswolds, taking the Casket of Ancient Winters in with them. The Thunder God's will to reach 'Melodi' makes him increasingly reckless. He charges through the Great Gates of Faerie and pounds his way through the Dark Elf army to save her from Malekith, but is thrown off his path by the mighty Dark Elf warrior, Algrim, which leads to them both falling into a deep pit. Now Malekith has the casket. On Asgard, Balder receives help defeating the Sand Devil from the man who had been intent on killing him before he's transported away by the woman he's rescued - one of the Wyrd Sisters. Elsewhere, the Warriors Three gather a gigantic army to prepare for Asgard's biggest battle yet...
Thor #348 *
Roger Willis fires his last iron bullet at Malekith, making him drop the Casket of Ancient Winters. Thor summons Mjolnir to free him from the pit, but lets Algrim fall into lava. Thor subdues the magically-transformed Malekith and disperses the other Dark Elves by breaking the ceiling with his hammer and letting the daylight in. Thor's so distracted by Lorelei that he doesn't notice Malekith breaking the Casket of Ancient Winters and releasing it's magical snowfall across Midgard (aka Earth) and freezing the door that blocks the way to Muspelheim. Countering the extreme cold with the Twilight Sword's connection the Eternal Flame, Surtur shatters the obstruction and leads his armies towards Asgard. Elsewhere, Balder the Brave's contact with the Wyrd Sisters makes him rethink his stance on suicide and meet his destiny. Returning to the desert on the back of his trusty horse, Balder picks up his would-be assassin, Agnar, and heads for Asgard...
