GOBLIN KNIGHT (1992-1993)

Marc Spector is hiding a dark secret under his new Moon Knight armour. Ever since his clash with the demonically-enhanced Hobgoblin, something has infected Spector. As his strength increases, his body degrades and the armour is the only thing keeping him together. Moon Knight is about to discover the source of potential cure has gone through a change of his own as the Hobgoblin's demonic side recently split from his body, becoming the separate Demogoblin. Marc Spector needs to act quickly, but Doctor Doom and the Magus have plans that will draw his attention to other matters. Will the delays caused by THE INFINITY WAR cost Moon Knight his life?

Marc Spector: Moon Knight #39
Doctor Doom summons Marc Spector to a social event at the Latverian Embassy which quickly devolves into chaos when the cyborg Sensor Squad crash the party. Spector discreetly dons his Moon Knight costume and fends off the terrorists, though he has some suspicions about their true motives. When the other guests leave, Doom implies to Spector that he knows his secret identity and demands the return of certain artefacts that were recently discovered in a section of land in Latveria obtained by SpectorCorp. Spector refuses, enraging Doom...

Marc Spector: Moon Knight #40
The Sensor Squad break into SpectorCorp headquarters, confirming Marc Spector's theory that they are actually agents of Doctor Doom who after after the artefacts. After the Squad are aggressively dispatched by Moon Knight, the hero takes a cyborg eye to Mister Fantastic of the Fantastic Four and, using his Avengers ID, convinces him to utilise the eye to help Moon Knight break into the Latverian Embassy. Despite the risk of causing an international incident, Moon Knight enters the Embassy and confronts Doctor Doom, realising the item he's after belonged to his mother. After a confrontation, Moon Knight relents and returns the locket containing a photo of Doom's father. Later, Marc Spector removes his armour, revealing to Jean-Paul 'Frenchie' DuChamp that his body has begun to deteriorate and mutate to a worrying degree...
Spider-Man #24
Spider-Man finds himself caught between the Hobgoblin and Demogoblin as they each try to become the one, 'true' Goblin by bumping the other off. A Spider-Man Doppelgänger attempts to assimilate Spidey, but the Hobgoblin blasts the Doppelgänger onto a railing, killing him. Spider-Man heads to Four Freedoms Plaza to find out what's going on, leaving the impaled four-armed corpse to be stolen by the Demogoblin...

The Demogoblin puts the Spider-Man Doppelgänger in cold storage while he goes looking for a way to revive it. Code: Blue are alerted to the Demogoblin's whereabouts and apprehend him, sending him to the Tombs Prison...
Marc Spector: Moon Knight #41
Before Moon Knight can reach the Mister Fantastic Doppelgänger to find out why he's set the heroes against each other, Psylocke stabs him in the mind with her psychic knife and learns Moon Knight is dying. Having survived the gamma bomb explosion (see THE INFINITY WAR), more Doppelgängers arrives and assault Four Freedoms Plaza. The Moon Knight Doppelgänger and Franklin Richards Doppelgänger use a Psi-phon to drain some of the real Franklin Richards' dream energy to gain enough power to free themselves from the Magus' control. Moon Knight interrupts their efforts, saving Franklin. But, with his newfound power, the Moon Knight Doppelgänger absorbs the Franklin Doppelgänger along with as many of the multiversal Moon Knights as he can, becoming Moon Shade...

Marc Spector: Moon Knight #42
Moon Shade hops realities to personally absorb the remaining Moon Knights. Earth-616's Moon Knight comes along for the ride, but fails to stop Moon Shade from absorbing Dark Moon, Moon Fang, Crescent Moon, Dino-Knight, Mr Spector and others until he gets the chance to use Moon Shade's vulnerability to Adamantium against him on Earth-42992. With Moon Shade dead, Moon Knight suddenly finds himself trapped in nothingness...
Marc Spector: Moon Knight #43
Moon Knight finds himself returned to Earth and in the midst of the battle with the Magus' Doppelgänger army at Four Freedoms Plaza. When it looks like he and the other heroes are on the edge of defeat, the Doppelgängers shut down and revert to their true forms. Elsewhere, Jean-Paul 'Frenchie' DuChamp contacts the Shadow Cabinet for help in locating the Demogoblin in order to cure Moon Knight. In Scotland, the Knights Templar meet to discuss their own plans for Frenchie...

 Web of Spider-Man #93
Free of the demon he's been sharing his body with (since THE FALL OF THE KINGPIN), Jason Macendale hones his skills as a killer to earn the right to wear the Hobgoblin costume once again. But he's in debt with the Foreigner for having Ned Leeds killed and obtaining the identity years earlier (during THE HOBGOBLIN REVEALED) and has to kill Moon Knight and Daily Bugle photographer Nick Katzenberg to pay off his debt. The Foreigner alerts Spider-Man to make things more interesting and the web-slinger soon comes to Moon Knight's aid when his journey to Four Freedom's Plaza is interrupted. When Hobgoblin believes he's killed Moon Knight, he moves on to his next target. Meanwhile, the incarcerated Demogoblin mentally resurrects the Spider-Man Doppelganger and calls on him for help...
Marc Spector: Moon Knight #44
In the wake of THE INFINITY WAR, the Knights Templar's plans to retrieve Jean-Paul DuChamp are interrupted when the Hell-Bent murder them all. Some time after the Fantastic Four clean the dead Doppelgangers out of Four Freedoms Plaza, Moon Knight visits for an examination from Mister Fantastic and Doctor Strange, revealing his ravaged body which prompts the demonic infection to take control and fight back. Strange and Mister Fantastic help Moon Knight regain control, but warn him he'll die in 72 hours. Following another clash with the Hobgoblin (see below), Moon Knight learns he needs a DNA sample from the Demogoblin to survive.

 Web of Spider-Man #94
Moon Knight rejoins Spider-Man to seek out the Hobgoblin who purues Nick Katzenberg. The two heroes save Katzenburg who goes into cardiac arrest. Moon Knight goes off to find the cure he needs to give to Mister Fantastic while Spider-Man takes Hobgoblin into custody. Elsewhere, the vampiric Hag and Troll accidentally help Venom escape from his prison transport on the way to the Vault. And the Doppelganger breaks Demogoblin out of jail...
Marc Spector: Moon Knight #45
Moon Knight breaks into Brinkstone Prison to get to the Demogoblin on the same night that serial killer John DeZoan is due to be electrocuted. Somehow, Mister Fantastic's technological upgrades to staff assist his break-in, but mess with the execution. There's a power cut and DeZoan ends up with electrical powers and starts killing his way through the prison. Moon Knight locates the Demogoblin, but contact with him makes him hallucinate. Moon Knight's not even sure what's real anymore when Demogoblin takes a bite out of him...

 Marc Spector: Moon Knight #46
Moon Knight allows his demoic infection to take over to defeat Demogoblin and realises the creature's plan was to escape prison using Marc Spector's body as a host. Moon Knight's running out of time as his journey to the exit is blocked by rioting prisoners and the murderous John DeZoan. DeZoan escapes and Moon Knight stops the riot, only to collapse when his timer runs out. Luckily, Frenchie comes to the rescue and takes Moon Knight to Doctor Strange's home where he and Mister Fantastic remove the Demo-Virus and cast it into a lost dimension. Moon Knight is saved, but he needs to continue to wear his armour for 48 hours. And he's unaware that another little demon has hitched a ride to his home...

Hobgoblin continues to utilise the Spider-Man Doppelganger, but is defeated by Spider-Man, Ghost Rider and Johnny Blaze and incarcerated in Brinkstone Prison (leading to his confrontation with Moon Knight) during SPIRITS OF VENOM.

Marc Spector: Moon Knight #47-50 (1992-1993)
John DeZoan becomes Deadzone and clashes with Moon Knight again; Moon Knight begins his 'Legacy Quest' to find a replacement for him in the event of his death; the Knights Templar kidnap Frenchie to protect him from the Hellbent; Moon Knight burns his Avengers priority card and deletes the Avengers' files on him before they get a chance to expel him.

Spider-Man #37 (1993)
Carnage kills the Spider-Man Doppelgänger (simply referred to as Doppelgänger) by stabbing him and throwing him off a building during MAXIMUM CARNAGE.

Marc Spector: Moon Knight #50, 52-53 (1993)
Gambit finally tracks down Moon Knight and warns him about his impending death, only to learn he's already dealt with the problem.

Marc Spector: Moon Knight #56 (1993)
When Moon Knight discovers an information leak in his network, he blames the Shadow Cabinet and forcibly disbands them; he soon discovers his mistake when he learns the leak came from Marlene Alraune and Frenchie during THE INFINITY CRUSADE.

 Amazing Spider-Man #385 (1994)
When Peter Parker next catches up with Nick Katzenburg, he and Mary Jane Parker learn he has cancer; seeing the state Katzenburg is in convinces Mary Jane to stop smoking.

Spider-Man #48 (1994)
Hobgoblin and Demogoblin's feud ends with the death of Demogoblin during THE ENEMY WITHIN.

 Amazing Spider-Man #398 (1995)
Nick Katzenburg is revealed to have died during WEB OF DEATH.

 Spider-Man: Hobgoblin Lives #1-3 (1997)
Roderick Kingsley is revealed to have been the real original Hobgoblin, having used the brain-washed Ned Leeds to cover his illegal activities; Kingsley kills Jason Macendale to fully reclaim the Hobgoblin name.

 Shadowland: Moon Knight #1-3 (2010)
Randall Spector is revealed to be alive; Randall battles Moon Knight under the new guise of Shadow Knight; Moon Knight finally kills Randall during SHADOWLAND.

Carnage #1 (2010)
Doppelgänger is revealed to have survived Carnage's attempt on his life and even aids in breaking him out of a prison transport.

 Amazing Spider-Man #23 (2017)
