WHEN HERO TURNS VILLAIN (1977)

Having just learned that it was Merlin who gave him his powers, Captain Britain (Brian Braddock) has been granted the magical Star Sceptre that gives him the power of flight for 15 minutes at a time. Cap is about to take his ability to fight crime to a whole new level, but the machinations of the sinister Manipulator are going to land him in a spot of bother, or dissuade Dai Thomas from thinking his nothing more than a lout.

Captain Britain's adventures were created for Marvel UK by American writers and, at this point, it seemed like Dick Van Dyke's performance in Mary Poppins was the only point of reference anyone seemed to have.
Title Jump: With the Captain Britain series abruptly ended by Marvel UK, Cap's story jumped to the pages of the reprint series Super Spider-Man which adjusted with a title change.

Captain Britain returns to his life as Brian Braddock and gets a ribbing from Jacko Tanner for visiting Courtney Ross in hospital. On their way to see her, a super-powered biker rips through a lorry on the motorway on front of them. When they drive alongside him, the Highwayman blows up Jacko's car with one of the studs on his leather jacket...

Captain Britain #38[1/4]
Brian leaves Jacko in the wreckage in favour of chasing the Highwayman as Captain Britain. The Highwayman deprives Cap of his Star Sceptre to defeat him and takes him back to his boss, the Manipulator, who uses his mystic gem to enslave our hero and send him to attack Queen Elizabeth...
Captain Britain #39[1/3]
Chief Inspector Dai Thomas's suspicions about Captain Britain are proven to be right when he launches himself at Queen Elizabeth. The Highwayman comes to her rescue and defeats Cap. The flashes of photographers' cameras breaks the Manipulator's spell on him as Dai Thomas puts him in the back of a police car. Cap breaks free and becomes a fugitive.

As a reward, the Manipulator gets a tour of Buckingham Palace and uses the opportunity to switch out the Queen's ring with the Manipulator's mind-control ring. The Manipulator's plot to regain the throne of the African nation that deposed him goes into action...
Super Spider-Man and Captain Britain #231[2/4]
Wearing the Manipulator's ring, Queen Elizabeth leads the Royal Navy away from England and towards the African nation of Umbazi. Captain Britain rips into one of the ships and disguises himself as a sailor. Dai Thomas sneaks aboard inside a packing crate, but is quickly discovered and send to the Manipulator who explains his plan to him, including his mental control over Captain Britain. Cap bursts in to confront the Manipulator who shoots poison gas at Cap and Dai, leaving them for dead...

Super Spider-Man and Captain Britain #232[2/4]
Captain Britain tears through the ship with Dai Thomas and lands on the deck where he's pummelled by seamen. Dai Thomas sets off a crate of flares to break the Manipulator's control over the seamen, allowing Cap to escape and defeat the Highwayman. Cap's brought low by the Manipulator's electrified cape, but his escape attempt fails when he steals a jet and crashes it into the sea. And it's all thanks to Dai Thomas who drained the jet's fuel, just in case. Though he still hates Captain Britain...
