THE CROSSING (1995-1996)

Often denounced as the worst Avengers storyline in history (and it's hard to argue), THE CROSSING was the last major event for Earth's Mightiest Heroes before ONSLAUGHT came along and Etch-a-Sketched the whole mess out of existence. A traitor would be revealed, heroes would go through major changes, characters would die... then, it's almost all undone by the the 'Destiny War' few years later. Thankfully.
Major Event: The sheer number of issues involved in their storyline mark it as a major event, though it's one that's largely been forgotten in the years that have followed.

Avengers #390
The Avengers' chill out time is interrupted by a fortune-telling pixie hobo, Tuc, who emerges from the bushes and leaves unsubtle hints about those assembled. Quicksilver and Crystal ignore the weirdness in favour talking about how familiar this kid is. Tuc warns that there's a traitor among them and pretty much tells Luna Maximoff's babysitter, Marilla, that she's going to die, drops in to Luna's bedroom to tell her he's her brother, then buggers off. Elsewhere, Janet van Dyne (aka, the Wasp) finds out she's lost her fortune...
Iron Man #319
Recently, Iron Man killed his college professor when he transformed into the murderous liquid Slag. While feeling his control over his own life slip away, he hallucinates visitations from his dead parents. After announcing the launch of Starcore Command to the assembled press, he hooks up with Bethany Cabe. Donning his new Model 15 Iron Man armour, he heads to Force Works HQ, the Works, where the Scarlet Witch bollocks him for undermining her leadership, so he decides it's time to reunite with the Avengers...

Guardians of the Galaxy #60[1/2] (tie-in)
A little after THE INFINITY WAR, Yellowjacket (Rita DeMara) left the Masters of Evil and hitched a ride with the Guardians of the Galaxy when they returned to their future timeline on Earth-691. With the team now disbanded, the drunken Yellowjacket is taken captive by alien crime boss Slagg. She escapes, pummel him into submission and barters for a trip back in time from one of his dodgy contacts...
War Machine #18 (tie-in)
Having murdered a Nazi and lost his armour in the timestream, James 'Rhodey' Rhodes decides to take a fishing holiday in Canada. Hawkeye shows up in time to save Rhodey from an alien cyborg dinosaur. Rhodey tries to get a woman called Skye to safety, only to charge into a glowing ball with eyes which grants him a whole new set of hi-tech armour...

War Machine #
19 (tie-in)
Rhodey instinctively knows how to use the Eidolon Warwear armour to defeat the ever-mutating alien Lictor, accidentally vaporising it. Skye explains that she led Rhodey to the location of the Eidolon Warwear on purpose, as it disappears into a tattoo on his chest. Hawkeye heads off in the direction of New York to attend an Avengers reunion. Back at WorldWatch, Sheva Joseph receives some bad news.

Avengers: The Crossing #1
Yellowjacket's jump through time stops off a few times on the way, showing her a future where the Avengers are criminals on the run, Captain America is deemed a traitor and the Avengers (including a very strange-looking Wasp) are attacking Avengers Mansion. When she finally arrives in present day Earth-616, a blonde girl warns her to get as far away as she can, then d she's blasted to death by a shadowed member of the Avengers, who's unaware that young Luna Maximoff has witnessed the whole thing...

The Avengers reunion is a pretty sombre event and everyones a bit confused by the door that recently appeared below Avengers Mansion that no one can open. The team investigate an explosion in the street and find Gilgamesh (an Eternal and former Avenger) under attack an army of mystery warriors. Later, Marilla goes down to the mystery door to find Luna's teddy only to find it open. Iron Man emerges and shoots her in the head.

Avengers #391
The Avengers learn of the two murders at the mansion, just as a blue guy called Neut emerges from the door and kills Gilgamesh, making it three. He escapes back through the door and Iron Man face-times the order to shut the mansion down. Only mocking laughter echoes through the halls of the abandoned Avengers HQ. Elsewhere, honorary Avenger Swordsman (Phillip Javert) leaves his lady Magdalene in bed and slinks off to the bushes to meet a boy in bearskins. And the Wasp learns who's responsible for her bankruptcy.

Force Works #16
Time doesn't seem to be running consistently at the Works. New member, Moonraker, apparently joined the team months ago and has hooked up with Spider-Woman (Julia Carpenter), though her daughter has no idea who he is. On their way back from the reunion, the Scarlet Witch and USAgent discuss Iron Man's increasingly odd behaviour and the secret room and strange technology 'Agent found below the Works. In space, Century continues his journey with the Broker's former-slaves, trying to stop them from killing him as they go, as he continues to search out the secrets of his own past. Elsewhere, Tony Stark invites Suzi Endo over to Los Angeles for something he has planned...
Avengers #392
Iron Man returns to New York to put Avengers Mansion under quarantine. At the Avengers' temporary HQ, the Van Dyne Estate, the team realise Luna Maximoff witnessed Yellowjacket's murder and could solve the mystery if she wasn't so distraught. Swordsman and Tuc are joined by the Vision and the Cotati Swordsman (an alien planet with Jaques Duquesne's memories) as they all come under attack from this blonde-haired mystery woman and two axe-wielding fellas called Malachi and Tobias. The Cotati Swordsman is taken prisoner as the villains "make the crossing' to get back to wherever they came from, presenting him to their mother... Mantis!

Iron Man #320
Days later, Iron Man agrees to help Henry Peter Gyrich to shut the Avengers down. Stark catches up with Machinesmith who's been working for him in one of Stark's secret labs. Secretly. Stark experiences another black-out, gets a psychic message from 'mystery future blonde' and finds himself back home with Bethany Cabe, wondering how he got there. In Vietnam, a handful of the Priests of Pama discover one of their temples is missing. In California, Marianne Rodgers breaks out of her asylum and she's looking for revenge on her ex, Tony Stark...
Iron Man #321
Tony Stark and Hank Pym try and fail to break through the door. Tony learns Hercules has also had visions of a young blonde woman. He then checks the Avengers Mansion security tapes and learns Iron Man killed Marilla, then blacks out. Tony wakes to find Pym dead and
Marianne Rodgers intent on killing him. He's saved by the mysterious Masque (who has a similar look to Madame Masque). Hank Pym wakes to find the mansion empty except for signs of a scuffle. Another mystery woman watches Suzi Endo as she arrives in Los Angeles.

Force Works #17
Force Works don't take kindly to Iron Man adding new member, Cybermancer (an out-of-character Suzi Endo) without consulting them. Iron Man breaks the news about the deaths at Avengers Mansion and reveals footage of Hawkeye carrying out the murders, then overrides USAgent's attempt to bring the archer in peacefully. Scarlet Witch encourages Iron Man to leave the team. USAgent keeps an eye on the seriously injured Hawkeye, while the rest of the team investigate the disappearance of Vietnam...
War Machine #20
War Machine takes down super gene-steroid freak, Wolfgang, then finds himself summoned by USAgent to help their fellow 'Brother in Arms' (see BROTHERS IN ARMS: VICIOUS CIRCLE), Hawkeye. Together, War Machine and USAgent beat back the aggressive Cybermancer and abscond with the recovering Hawkeye. At WorldWatch, Sheva Joseph reveals her exposure to the timestream might be killing her.

Iron Man #322
The mystery blonde appears to Tony Stark and tells him she's opened his mind. He blacks out and comes to his senses in full armour in his ruined apartment. There's been a struggle and there's no sign of Bethany Cabe. Three days later, Iron Man returns to Avengers Mansion and is defeated by Neut when he emerges from the door. He calls on the Avengers for help, but Wasp throws him out when she reveals Tony Stark is the one who's left her bankrupt. Hawkeye contacts the Black Widow to ask for her help...
Force Works #18
Black Widow catches up with Hawkeye, USAgent and War Machine as they agree Iron man is behind their problems. Force Works crash land in a place that looks like Dagobah where Vietnam used to be where Apocryphus of the Anachronauts attacks. Moonraker suddenly remembers his real name is Gustav Brandt (making him Mantis' father, Libra). Back at the Works, Amanda Chaney discovers the secret basement level run is emanating temporal radiation and discovers it's run by a sentient computer called VIRGIL, created by Timely Industries which will be founded by Tony Stark 15 years in the future...

War Machine #21
Iron Man sends Deathunt 9000 of the Anachronauts to locate and finish off Hawkeye. Deathunt and his squad of cyborgs make short work of Hawkeye, Black Widow and USAgent. War Machine rejoins the group and unleashes the full power of his new Eidolon Warwear armour to defeat Deathunt, who teleports away. Hawkeye steals Black Widow's Quinjet so he can face Iron Man himself. Elsewhere, Sheva Joseph begins to age rapidly.
Iron Man #323
Hawkeye's macho showdown with Iron Man doesn't go to plan as the armoured Avenger talks him out of fighting. Together they visit the Avengers who are happy to see Hawkeye, but Iron Man is no longer welcome since he bankrupted the Wasp. He's even less welcome when Luna allows the team to scan her mind and reveals Iron Man killed Marilla and Yellowjacket. In the Arctic, Masque makes her way through the snow after escaping Machinesmith...

Avengers #393
In a place outside of time, Kang the Conqueror confronts Mantis over the speed that their plan is moving. In the present, Iron Man clashes with the Avengers and mortally wounds the Wasp before the mystery blonde appears and sends him through a portal. Tuc arrives and kidnaps Luna. Giant-Man performs an experimental procedure on the Wasp which leaves her in a cocoon. Masque arrives in a plane, crashing it and emerging from the flames announcing that Tony Stark must be stopped.
Force Works #19
Kang and Mantis return Iron Man to the present day where he kills Amanda Chaney for snooping around the secret level of the Works and discovering another Suzi Endo in suspended animation. In what used to be Vietnam, Moonraker confirms that he is Gustav Brandt, Mantis' father. He was placed into the body of Moonraker, a hero from an alternate Earth who became a member of Force Works, by the Priests of Pama. Century returns to the Works and teleports Rachael Carpenter away, leaving War Machine to face Iron Man alone...

War Machine #22
The Eidolon Warwear gives War Machine a chance against Iron Man he's never had in previous fights, but Rhodey's friendship with Tony Stark proves to be his weakness. Iron Man blasts a hole through War Machine, leaving him to die and unaware that his armour will heal him. Century takes down Cybermancer. Iron Man flies away, setting the Works' defences to kill any intruders. Century teleports Moonraker and Black Widow over to the Avengers, leaving the reunited Force Works to fight their own headquarters...
Iron Man #324
Iron Man returns to his Arctic base to repair Machinesmith and allows Marianne Rodgers reads his mind. Century, Vision, Moonraker and Crystal attack the base which turns out to be a giant tank. They teleport away again after Marianne telepathically informs them that Tony Stark wasn't always evil, he was just subverted by Kang. Moonraker goes missing during the 'port and finds himself Mantis' prisoner outside of time...

Force Works #20
Before he left, Stark ordered VIRGIL to run his Siege Perilous Protocol which will remake time on Earth so that the world is ruled by Kang. Force Works fight their way past his solid light constructs and Scarlet Witch resets the countdown with a hex, saving the world. But there's still a trigger device on Starcore Command...
Avengers #394
The mystery blonde rescues Moonraker from Mantis' torture chamber and crosses back to the Avengers, only to be pursued by Neut. Neut easily defeats the Avengers again and the blonde jumps in front of Quicksilver, saving his life. As she dies, she's revealed to be the future Luna Maximoff. The Wasp emerges from her cocoon and takes Neut down, demonstrating her new powers and mutated appearance. Masque realises the only way to stop the smartest evil guy on the planet is with help from the smartest good guy on the planet...

War Machine #23
War Machine is followed aboard Starcore Command by Skye who confirms she's been following Rhodey and her cosmic bosses needed him to claim the Warwear armour so that he could defeat Iron Man. They're attacked by Kang's emissary, Dirge, another host to Eidolon Warwear. Dirge mortally wounds Skye, inspiring Rhodey to fully embrace his Warwear and meld with Dirge. After learning a little of the Eidolon race's origins, Dirge self destructs, destroying Starcore Command. With Skye now dead, Rhodey intends heading out to the stars to find out more when all this is over...
Avengers: Timeslide #1
Things come full circle as the Avengers and Century lay siege to Avengers Mansion, taking down Anachrononauts and seeing a flash fo Yellowjacket on the way. Hercules uses the code to the Door left in his brain by future-Luna and the group jump back in time (actually Earth-96020, ten years in the past) to recruit a teenage Tony Stark.

Tobias makes the crossing in an attempt to stop the Avengers and ends up killing young Tony's parents. With help from a young Matt Murdock, the Avengers defeat Tobias and use Doctor Doom's time machine to travel back to the present...
Iron Man #325
Teenage Tony Stark has about nine hours to figure out ten years worth of scientific knowledge so he can take on his future self. At Avengers Mansion, the Door has now disappeared and Henry Peter Gyrich has brought Mandroids to stop the Avengers from leaving. In the Artic, Teen Tony breaks into Iron Man's mobile headquarters - backed up by Masque and Hawkeye - takes out Machinesmith and dons a prototype suit of armour.

In New York, the Avengers beat back the Mandroids until Century teleports them to the Arctic where Teen Tony has lost the fight to his adult self. In an unexpected move, adult Tony rips his younger self's heart out. Kang and Mantis arrive to put the final stage of their plan into action...
Avengers #395
Vision saves Teen Tony's life by merging his mechanical heart with him. Kang and Mantis transform the Arctic HQ into the House of Kang from which they plan to alter time and turn the survivors of the new age into Anachrononauts.  The Avengers are losing the fight until adult Tony brings the Cotati Swordsman who blasts Kang and defeats Mantis.

The Avengers attack Kang's Temporal Transposer until Iron Man destroys it by reflecting its own energy back at it. Kang and Mantis teleport away as Iron Man dies, leaving a schematics diagram for his chest plate. Tuc returns baby Luna to her parents and the Scarlet Witch arrives in a Hex Ship...
Age of Innocence: The Rebirth of Iron Man #1
Giant-Man (Dr Hank Pym - doctor of everything) has fixed up teenage Tony Stark as best he can with dead Tony Stark's chest-plate schematics (while all the Avengers watched - no pressure). Now it's up to Tony to fight his way out of a coma. Marianne Rodgers, Edwin Jarvis, Petter Potts, Happy Hogan and Masque all visit him and talk to him like he's the Tony they remember while he lies unconscious. A spectre of villainy is young Tony's final visitor, taunting him with super-villains he's never even heard of. The next morning, young Tony Stark wakes up.
Force Works #21
Suzi Endo and the remnants of Force Works gather at the Works for a final holographic message from the deceased Tony Stark. The other Suzi Endo (Cybermancer) is revealed to be from an alternate timeline (Earth-9528) and taunts Force Works, telling them that only Kang could have saved their timeline and tells the other Suzi that she'll become like her. Evil Endo's rescuers arrive in the form of Ultron and Wonder Man from Earth-9528, a world where Kang died that is now collapsing in on itself. With the portal jammed open, it's going to take Earth-616 with it...

Force Works #22
Evil Suzi Endo, Wonder Man and Ultron fight their way to evil Endo's Cybermancer armour. Scarlet Witch offers to help save them from their world where Endo and Tony Stark repaired the planet after Kang died, but became artificial. Endo and Ultron start to disappear as their reality dies, Wonder Man returns through the portal to save Earth-616, but it remains open even when he dies. Earth-616 Suzi Endo throws the Cybermancer armour through which closes the portal. 1. A lot was undone, but it wasn't retconned. It still happened! The one major change was that Immortus was revealed to be behind it, rather than Kang as revealed in 'Avengers Forever'.
