THE OLD ORDER CHANGETH (1965)

The Avengers started out as 'Earth's Mightiest Heroes'! At the time, that counted as Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Ant-Man and the Wasp. They soon lost the Hulk, added Captain America to their ranks while Ant-Man made the change to Giant-Man, continuing to make them a force to be reckoned with. But when all the originals decide to drop out, leaving only Cap and three villains... can they still be counted as the mightiest Earth has to offer?

In hindsight, losing their banner characters and leaving Cap with Hawkeye, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver was a bold move at the time. But line-up changes would become an Avengers tradition in the years that followed and 'Cap's Kooky Quartet' were just the beginning...

Tales of Suspense #64[1/2] (tie-in)
The Russian Government hold Natasha Romanova's family hostage to coerce her into donning fishnets and a mask and killing Iron Man. With a costume that enables her to act like her namesake, the Black Widow returns to America and convinces Hawkeye to hep her kidnap Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan. Iron Man focuses on rescuing his friends, allowing Hawkeye and the Black Widow to escape.

X-Men #11 (tie-in)
The race is on between the X-Men and the Brotherhood to Evil Mutants to find the newest, most powerful mutant to emerge, so far. Magneto gets to the Stranger first, but his attempts to impress him backfire. The Stranger turns Mastermind to stone and Magneto abandons Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch in favour of his potential ally. The twins decide their debt to Magneto is paid and escape to Europe. The Stranger reveals himself to be from an alien race who collect mutants and takes Magneto and the Toad with him when he leaves Earth. Cerebro then alerts the X-Men to the newest, most powerful mutant to emerge, so far...
Avengers #15
Baron Heinrich Zemo gathers every member of the Masters of Evil into one team and kidnaps Rick Jones in his final bid for revenge on Captain America. While the Avengers have an almost surreal battle with the Masters on and above the streets of New York City, Captain America tracks Zemo to his Amazon headquarters. After freeing Rick, Cap sets up a rockslide that falls when Zemo shoots randomly, killing the evil mastermind in the process...

Avengers #16
The Enchantress and Executioner evade capture while Thor transports the Melter and the Black Knight to another dimension where the Avengers apprehend them. Later, Thor heads off to deal with issues in Asgard while Iron Man, Giant-Man and the Wasp meet up and decide to take their leave of the Avengers, acknowledging (and completely accepting) that Captain America is still missing. Hawkeye makes a bid to join the team by breaking into Avengers Mansion and tying up Jarvis. By the time Cap and Rick Jones return from the Amazon, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch have been accepted as members and the entire line-up has changed. Iron Man advises Cap to lead the new team on a search for the Hulk...
X-Men #12 (1965) 
The 'mutant' Cerebro senses turns out to be the Juggernaut who also isn't a mutant at all.

Journey into Mystery #116-117 (1965) 
Odin puts Thor and Loki on trial to decide which of them has lied to him; the Enchatress and Executioner continue to vex Thor, this time by attempting to kidnap Jane Foster.

Avengers #17 (1965) 
The Avengers try and fail to recruit the Hulk; the Avengers clash with the Mole Man during TRAPPED IN THE LAIR OF THE LEADER.

Tales to Astonish #69 (1965) 
Rick Jones allies himself with the Hulk once again.

Kang faces Captain America's new Avengers team.

X-Men #17-18 (1966) 
Magneto returns, revealing he escaped the Stranger's world on a rocket ship but left the Toad behind; Professor X alerts the Stranger to Magneto's presence on Earth to save the X-Men.

Avengers #26 (1966) 
Wasp and Giant-Man fight alongside the Avengers again during AMONG US WALKS A GOLIATH.

Avengers #28-29 (1966) 
Giant-Man (as Goliath) and Wasp return to the Avengers; Black Widow is revealed to have survived the assassination attempt by the KGB; she's ordered to destroy the Avengers, allying with Power Man (Erik Josten) and Swordsman (Jacques Duquesne) during AMONG US WALKS A GOLIATH.

Tales of Suspense #78 (1966) 
Captain America reunited with Nick Fury; Fury gives Cap a role carrying out special missions for SHIELD during T.H.E.M.

Avengers #30 (1966) 
Black Widow fails to defeat the Avengers when she can't bring herself to harm Hawkeye.

Avengers #33 (1966) 
Black Widow begins acting as an ally to the Avengers.

X-Men #27 (1966) 
Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are offered membership in the X-Men when they decide to take leave from the Avengers.

Avengers #21-22 (1965) 
The Enchantress next attacks the Avengers by granting Erik Josten super-powers using Baron Zemo's old equipment and sending him to attack them as Power Man.

Tales to Astonish #89-91 (1967) 
The Stranger returns to Earth with a completely different mission; the Stranger enslaves the Hulk with the intention of using him to wipe out humanity with the survivors creating a better society; the Stranger decides he prefers the Abomination and takes the creature back to his world, instead.

Avengers #44 (1967) 
Black Widow is first offered membership in the Avengers.

Tales of Suspense #91 (1967) 
Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan reveal they eloped and are married.

X-Men #37 (1967) 
Having returned to human form, Mastermind joins the terrorist mutant group Factor Three.

Avengers Annual #1 (1967) 
Executioner next faces the Avengers (alongside the Enchantress) as a member of the Mandarin's cadre of villains; Thor and Iron Man return to the Avengers for the first time since taking leave to face the enormous threat.

Avengers #47 (1967) 
Magneto reforms the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants with the Toad (somehow back on Earth), coercing the reformed Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to join them during WHEN MUTANTS CLASH.

X-Men #43-45 (1968) 
Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch clash with both the Avengers and X-Men during their brief return to the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants during WHEN MUTANTS CLASH.

Black Widow finally accepts Avengers membership during THE MARK OF HAWKEYE.

Captain America #168 (1973) 
Baron Heinrich Zemo's son, Helmut Zemo, takes on the name Phoenix and attacks Captain America and the Falcon in attempt to avenge his father that also leaves him facially scarred.

Avengers #137-138 (1975) 
Pretending to be the Stranger, the Toad attacks the Avengers using technology stolen from the Stranger's Labworld.

Helmut Zemo returns as the new Baron Zemo.

Baron Helmut Zemo's attempt to resurrect his father using the Bloodstone fail.

Quasar #16 (1990) 
The Stranger admits that he killed the composite Gigantian being and took its place.

A repentant Baron Helmut Zemo restores Captain America's lost effects by travelling back in time using twin moonstones; the enmity between Zemo and Cap is temporarily defused during CIVIL WAR.

Iron Man #13-14 (2006-2007) 
Spymaster leaves Happy Hogan in a coma; Tony Stark turns off Happy's life support during CIVIL WAR.
